This is the book of a young woman abducted and held prisoner for 7 years in a backyard gardening shed as told the eyes of her 5 year old boy who was born while she was a prisoner. His whole life has been the small room where they live. It's an excellent viewpoint and is really well-done.

Really 2.5 stars. The idea of this story was good, but it just seemed a little disjointed to me. I really liked the Florida history and those parts. But I think as a reader and a current Floridian I could tell that this wasn't written by a Florida author. There was just something inauthentic about the setting and the characters. But that's okay. It was an adventure, the kids were really interesting, and it has a lot of pieces to the story that fit well together.

I read this to my son, and it took us a really long time to et through it. It was very descriptive, so it teneded to seem long winded at times. We both really liked the tales of Sterling and his racoon though. It may have been different if I had read this all in one shot on my own. It was good though.

I absolutely loved this book. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but once I had I couldn't put it down. Although strange at first, I ended up loving how it was written from Wanda's point of view as a soul living inside Melanie's body alongside Melanie. Stunning book, I would love for it to be made into a film. I might just have to read it again.....

The narration was as almost convincing, yet I could never really get into this book. I felt like I stood slightly outside it. And maybe this is just because the child's point of view is just too far removed from what I can really imagine. Jack seemed too old for his years. I wanted to buy into his worldview, but in the end, it just seemed like a good fictional experiment in narrative voice and nothing more. Good but not completely successful, and in the end, that made it disappointing.
