I am a little surprised at the numerous 1 star and 2 star reviews, but I guess everybody is entitled to an opinion and the fact that I loved this story probably has more to do with my personal preferences than some objective quality of the book. I admit, the plot isn't all that special and the device of a very old person reminiscing about the adventures and loves of his / her youth has been used frequently. The appeal for me lies in the well researched recreation of an era - the popular entertainers of the Depression Era, crossing the country by train and either providing the best show on earth or being run out of town as frauds. They were probably both. I liked that the author clearly loves the circus and the animals involved, and I also liked the fact that this is more a historical novel than a romance imitation of The Notebook. The difficulties of life on the road and the companionship people find in the most difficult situations balance the more obvious romance elements. The contemporary segments were also well developed, illustrating the alienation and the health problems of old age. The ending, while predictable, is at least spectacular, and I don't begrudge the main characters their chance at happiness.

The whole experience of reading each of these books was amazing. Have to read Mr. King's introduction to understand. It was a one of a kind experience to read these as they were released, knowing that with the first book, he had not yet written the last.

I'll pick this up and finish it at some point, because I did enjoy it while reading it. As other reviewers pointed out, though, wonderful as Theroux's writing is, his crotchetiness can grate after a while. When it doesn't, it's amusing, as is how dated this is.

Okay, I'll be honest. This is one of the very, very few books that I have ever in my life not finished. I made it about 60% of the way through before I had to just close it out and say enough. Like another reviewer has already mentioned, I found the title somewhat misleading. Yes, I did read the synopsis when I got the book, but between that time and when I actually began reading it, I forgot what it was about. When you're looking at an e-book at 2 in the morning, all you have to go on is the title and the cover. This appears to be nothing more than your typical romance novel, perhaps one on the juicy side. It is anything but. It is most assuredly a Christian romance, with heavy emphasis on the Christian. Now, I am not one to normally seek out Christian fiction, but I don't have a problem reading it, in general. This book even starts out as a lovely story on the subject of a young man coming to faith. But. When it got to the point of direct preaching and the discussion of why gay marriage was wrong and sinful, I had enough. I felt like I'd been transported into a hellfire and brimstone sermon by Jerry Fallwell, and this is not why I read fiction. In addition, I am firmly of the belief that it is not my duty in life to judge. Jesus said that the most important commandment is to love one another. Hate-filled rhetoric is not any way to show love to our fellow humans, no matter what you believe.

I mean, I'd only recommend it for people doing teaching in high school or college... but I'd definitely recommend it for them. I suspect many of the tips in here can be gleaned from many sources, but they've done a really interesting job assembling a great deal of data - from evaluations, video recordings, detailed interviews, course materials, etc. - on what goes on in good classes. One of the most interesting sections is on how, exactly, you determine what's a good class and what's not. I'll probably re-read this every couple of years from here out just to stay on top of it.

Great book for a 5-8th grade girl. Great historical fiction of a lone girl finding her place in the world. I read it for a teaching class and enjoyed it myself.

This book is an epic action/horror genre, which is presented in the form of several interviews. If you read this at night, you might never fall asleep again. The descriptions of carnage are extremely vivid. Each page is full of diction. "...meat grinder, a wood chipper, organic matter clouding like sawdust above the horde." (98) One of the best parts of the book is the battle of Yonkers. (page 92-104) Despite being armed with so much heavy weapons and machine guns, the human army barely scratched the zombie horde advancing toward them. However, in a later interview, the humans managed to massacre zombies with bolt action rifles! This is an example where strategy triumphs over pure strength and firepower. As the interviewee says, "I know 'professional' historians like to talk about how Yonkers represented a 'catastrophic failure of the modern military apparatus,' how it proved the old adage that armies perfect the art of fighting the last war just in time for the next one." (102) That is my favorite passage from the book. However, be warned, curse words are as common as zombies in this book. Overall, this book is extremely excellent. I recommend for everyone to read this book. Other works by this author are The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead.

Cute, humorous tale. Would recommend for all parents of sweet, friendly, well-intentioned, yet troublesome puppies.
