I hate what they did to Marino in this book! I hope he is able to redeem himself in the next one, although I don't know how.

couldn't eat fish for weeks after reading. oh oh so delicious otherwise. Oskar Matzerath is perhaps bestest character ever. grass also has really good essays for writers, "on writing and politics" 1967-1983. in this collection lives "The Tin Drum in Retrospect or the author as dubious witness," where Grass still cannot rid his brain of Oskar, and he sayth of his character: "A young man, an existentialist in accordance with the fashion of the day. A mason by trade. He lived in our times. A savage, rather haphazardly well read, he was not chary of quotations. Even before prosperity errupted, he was disgusted with properity and in love with his disgust. Right in the middle of his small town (which remained nameless) he therefore built himself a pillar and chained himself to the top of it. His vituperating mother handed up his meals in a dinner pail affixed to a pole. Her attempts to lure him down to earth were backed up by a chorus of young girls with mythical hairdos. The small-town traffic circled around his pillar, friends and enemies gathered, and in the end a whole community was looking up at him. He, the stylite, high above them all, looked down, nonchalantly alternating fixed leg and free-moving leg; he found his perspective and reacted with a volley of metaphors."

Honestly, I think one of the best things I like about the Shiloh series is that its set in West Virginia, with very West Virginian characters; I have family from there, and it just feels like settling into a part of home, what with the dialect and all. This is the conclusion to Naylor's dog-centered trilogy, and I loved it as a kid. In some ways, I think it's the strongest of the three, because there's so much going on in terms of growing up and character development and all of these fun adult terms that you don't care about when you're 11. It's just a good yarn, and anyone who's ever been in love with a dog would like it, and the people are good bits for those of us looking for a story with meat to it, and consideration, and I'm totally going to make my niece and nephews read this trilogy when they get older. Perhaps I'll even tell them about the family cabin in West Virginia.

I was a big fan of Mary Higgins Clark back in the 90's. Her mysteries always had good twists and turns and the culprit was always a good surprise. I also like how she always weaves the Bronx and Catholicism in the stories. Unfortunately, I've noticed as the author gets older so does her writing. She writes about people in their mid-thirties but she is so far from that age group that the dialog doesn't seem natural. Though I liked the book somewhat I kept getting this feeling like I was reading from a "Murder She Wrote" script.

This book was so intense and gory and everything I expected it to be. This series just gets better and better by the book!

I wish there was a three and a half. It wasn't as bad as a three yet not quite a four. It is a beautiful tale and thought provoking, but hard to finish.
