The thing about this Nancy Drew mystery that makes it stand out is the unique conceit of writing it from the perspective of the sidekicks. George and Bess narrate the whole thing, as the mystery is that Nancy herself has gone missing. Granted, the mystery itself is not so difficult to solve, but the fact that it takes them the whole length of the book to work it out does kind of demonstrate why Nancy is the detective and her friends are the supporting cast. It also gives some nice perspective on Nancy (a completely focused detective who sometimes forgets where she parked her car) and Ned (a nice guy, but boring when he drones on about Beowulf) that you would not otherwise get from Nancy's usual narration. It also has some nice tongue in cheek moments, such as River Heights having a location called Anvil Park, in a nod to the somewhat obvious clues that tend to populate a typical Nancy Drew mystery. I don't know how much you would enjoy this particular installment if you were not already a fan of Nancy Drew mysteries in general, but if you have read them before and like them, you will be delighted by the innovation of this particular story.

what am I, a communist? Do I hate freedom? That's basically what I'd be saying if I didn't love this - that I hate freedom.

Loved this book. Beautifully written and intriguing. May be the most accessible of Eco's books, though I also loved Island of the Day Before.

After reading the mammoth Crimson Petal, I needed something a bit lighter to read. I want to say easy-going, but that’s not really the right word for these Frost books. I read the first in the series a while ago, and was keen to see what hijinks Mr Frost could get up to this time out. It’s more of the same, of course, Frost paired up with a younger partner who gets frustrated at his lacksadaisical ways but is ultimately impressed when the mysteries are solved. There’s something about the way Wingfield writes that really brings you into the story. Last time, I mentioned that although it was set in winter, the story made you feel warm and cosy and involved. This time, the pair are so overworked and tired, cases piling on them, and you just really feel it too. Maybe it’s just because I was feeling tired as well, though. Anyway, overall, I really enjoyed it. It felt, perhaps, slightly more serious in tone than the first book, but I’m still keen to read more.

fascinating: on this computer when you hold your mouse over the stars to rate a book, it tells you what they mean. 1 = didn't like it 2 = it was ok 3 = liked it 4 = loved it 5 = it was amazing

I just gotta say, it was so much better than the fourth one. If there's anyone reading this who liked the series but thought the fourth one was such total crud that they wouldn't even bother with the fifth, I would suggest reading it. It's nowhere near as preachy about global warming. Sure, it isn't quite Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, and it's not even in the same league as School's Out- Forever (my personal favorite). But it was good. Very good. So read it. Yes.
