I heard about this book on NPR as a "book to return to". http://www.npr.org/templates/story/st... First published in 1997, it has been updated (2005) Suskind, a white journalist for the Wall Street Journal, follows the life of D.C. Cedric Jennings through his high school years at Ballou and his freshman year at Brown. This is a story I thought I knew (I did teach at Whitman for many years), smart ghetto boy trying to survive the "hood", but Suskind's insight really helped me to better understand the enourmous difficulty of surviving and prospering with a terrible urban education. Barbara, his single mother and single-minded mother, is quite a force. Be sure to read the Afterword.

This was more of a long essay (diatribe) than a book per se. I think he made some good points, especially concerning the distruction that has been caused in the name of religion. I'm not sure how effective this book will be in converting anyone to forsake their religion and join the cult of the rational. I think that people still need a sense of belonging, a belief in something bigger than themselves, and a sense of community that can be found in religion. While I think that many atrocities have been justified in the name of religion, I don't think eradicating it from our society is practical or desirable.

The book contains 92 little tricks mainly about the nuances that subconsciously evoke people into engaging conversation, and you just need to practice a few in a real life setting to realise that hey, it actually works. A lot of stuff here you might not have known about but is excellent to know. Should be read in small doses though, because it takes time to actually put these ideas to work bit by bit, and also because the author's frequent references to herself can feel a bit like she's on an ego-trip too much to take in a single fast read. And why the number 92?

Never thought I'd say this, but this book was depressing as all fuck, to the point where I began avoiding it halfway through. Which is funny, because my edition had an author interview in the back, where Lawhead said "I don't think this story was particularly depressing." Oooookaaaay. . . I liked how he switched main characters from the first book to the second, which doesn't happen often in a series. As in the first one, his characters are by far the strongest element.

Boyamalı Not Defteri: Ajanda TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

This was a nice collection of short stories. I liked the stories at the beginning much more than those at the end, and could have honestly done without "Huntress" or "Testing", which had different feels than the rest of the stories and were, in my opinion, much weaker. The contains eleven stories in total, of which 7 take place in the same world as her Tortall books - though oddly enough, none of them are located in Tortall proper. All of the Tortall stories were a delight, and I loved seeing and revisting some favorite characters again, if only briefly. Fans of Pierce will love this collection. Those who have not yet discovered her would do well to pick it up.
