the is the most comprehensive vegetarian cookbook i have come across. it is easily referenced for common and obscure veggies. i use 9 out of every 10 recipes over and over again. especially the borscht! oh beets, how i love you and the way you turn my poop into the color of your hearty, earthy meat.

I really wanted to love this book, to appreciate its classiness and dignity and deep appreciation of art. However, the problem is that with all its splendor of music and art, it is too expository. I am very visual when I read, and I depend on the narrative to float me along, to raise strong vivid images. It failed to do that. The cadence is choppy and before I can attempt to grasp a scene or a character, it has skittered past me. Its very lightness was ponderous. This is a first novel for Houghteling, and she does show promise and passion. The passion was buried, however, under needless exposition and too many paintings. The author has her degree in fine arts; she unquestioningly knows what she is talking about. But I would like to see this novel be more novelistic--it reads too much like lesson after lesson strung together for Art History 101. I was torn between 2 and 3 stars, but because of its intelligence and promise, I felt it deserved 3 stars. But beware the coming boredom when you are reading. I was groaning for the end, all too happy to put this book down to start on another.

Slightly Shady sees the start of the professional partnership between Lavinia Lake and Tobias March who make private and discreet enquiries for people. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others I've read by Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz), I'm afraid to say. What was most irritating was the repetition of "Bloody Hell" from both of the protagonists at any given opportunity. It was just a bit too much. That said, there were a few good laughs in the story, and while the development of the romance between Lavinia and Tobias was minimal, I'm certain that the other books featuring these characters will mark the progress they make. A good read, but not the best of Quick's writing.

There are a few versions of Browning's THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN available, so if you like the text you might want to pick and choose your edition based on the illustrations. I think traditionally this text gets taught at secondary school, however, I can't see any reason why a year five or six class shouldn't be introduced to it. The plot of the poem is of a stranger who comes to the town of Hamelin in Germany to rid the place of rats. He completes his mission by luring them out of town and into the river with his pipe music. However, when the time comes for the town council to pay him for his work, they will not, and so, as a truly macabre act of revenge, he lures the town's children away in the same way that he did with the rodents. It's a dark poem, and yet strangely hypnotic. Based on a time when the town's children really were lost, purportedly to the plague or some other medical epidemic or perhaps to a landslide- there are various suggestions- Browning's interpretation may be a considered one of a number of secondary sources of art and literature depicting these events. This poem is great to get discussion going, a literary detective case to piece together what actually might have happened when read in conjunction with other representations of the events in Hamelin. It also offers the children the chance to write in their verse, what happened in Hamelin, based on Browning's poem, or perhaps turn their hands to journalism and write a newspaper story based on the events depicted in the poem. As a writer, Browning can also be used on projects on the Victorians, with the added bonus (if it can be termed that) of having his tomb in Poets' Corner in Westmister Abbey and available to be visited. Certainly not a light read, but definitely one to ge a lot out of.

This is a difficult review, because I loved the first 3 books so much. Fourth Comings was awful, and Perfect Fifths was neccessary, but not amazing. In many ways, I wish the author had stopped after the third book. Either way, I loved following Jessica and Marcus from high school through adulthood.
