This one was pretty funny. I liked the conclusion to the series.

This book is receiving enormous hype after Jennifer Egan won the Pulitzer. I appreciated that I read the book before I realized the hype surrounding it. The book centers on a collection of characters who are highlighted at very specific times in their lives over the course of years. As the book unfolds, the web of relationships emerges through the last chapter. With the backdrop of the music industry, readers explore aspirations, disappointments and failures as the characters grow and evolve in a world that is changing. The beauty of the book is the honesty with which Egan creates characters and situations that convey depth and emotional authenticity. She also provides fascinating commentary about the evolution of communication and interactions in our society.

I don't, in the whole, share his world-view, but I love the way he writes about it. He had strong chops; his first collection "Harmonium" is packed with concentrated technical tours-de-force, many of which don't necessarily seem to be about anything except short exercises in poetics. Precise, funny, and strongly evocative, but of what? That and poems like "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird" and "The Emperor of Ice-Cream" got him a reputation as a kind of nonsense poet. In part it was a fair cop; in "Harmonium" especially he was just having fun and showing off. Otherwise people should have tried harder. Let be be finale of seem, already, especially when the bucks go clattering over Oklahoma. Anyway. Later on he became more sober-sided and contemplative, but the way he engineered verse was rarely less than fascinating.

The world building and alternate history in this was fantastic. I love Napoleon-era naval fiction, and while this wasn't quite the same, moving along the Aurora with Matt reminded me so much of the Hornblower books. At times it felt more like a love letter to seamanship than a novel with an ongoing plot, but that didn't bother me at all. Kate did, however. I think Matt calls her willful once, and that's a freaking understatement. This is one of those times where in trying to create an independent, awesome female for young girls to look up to, the author goes way overboard and makes her stubborn, selfish, dumb and irritating. I can't count how many times I want to reach into the book, knock her out and lock her in a room on the ship. The plot itself was decent. I expected much more from the cloud cats, but the pirate stuff was a fun read. (view spoiler) All in all, this was a fantastic look at an alternate history I totally want more of, and I love Matt Cruse. Grabbing the rest of the series when I can.

Entertaining and funny. All the great baseball books help you see the game differently. This is one of those books.

2.5 stars A few people have already pointed this out and I have to agree- this book is based on some pretty whacky and unlikely coincidences. The main character must be the luckiest man alive, that's all I can say. Some parts of the book were absolutely hilarious. The first segment which was based in Ireland was B-O-R-I-N-G and a complete waste of words. The Las Vegas segment was my favourite, probably because I had seen alot of what he explained first hand when I travelled there recently. I stayed at the Bellagio as well, so it was awesome to read about his experiences there. Some of the graphic explanations of golf and poker had me drifting off and the writing style was distinctly 'male'. I have no doubt the author did that so his book would appeal to men over women. All in all, it was very funny in parts, but the quality of writing just wasn't there the whole way through the book.

Loved the strong portrayal of friendship in this book. It reminded me of my childhood friends and how we spent our days exploring a near-by woods and creek. I think I love Stephen King so much because when he came out with Carrie, I was 16 years old and identified with the whole high school clique thing. So I kept reading every book he wrote, and he quickly became and remains my all time favorite author. I kind of feel like we grew up together. I generally enjoy the movies based on the novels too, but I must say I HATED the ending of It.

Uzun bir kitap listesine şaşırtıcı bir başlangıç. Gerçekten sayfa dönüm bir deneyim oldu. Clarke harika.
