this book took me forever to read, due largely to the fact that the way howard zinn constructed a sentence drove me insane. however, in the end i did like it. a lot of holes in my knowledge of history were filled (apparently, i had previously tuned out in any discussion relating to the ford, carter or reagan presidencies.) and i felt that reading zinn's more editorial thoughts were fitting, given the current primary season. i do still say that he needs to learn how to reign in his comma use and that it would be pretty fair to sum up 689 pages by saying "christopher columbus ruined it for everybody."

I thought this was a hard read because of the names - there's these long Russian names, and people have nicknames too, so it was frustrating at first to figure out who the characters were. Once that problem was figured out, it's a pretty good story. I thought it went on a little long though. I guess that goes without saying for Tolstoy.

Not entirely sure how I feel about this novel. I kind of want to give it a dose of Xanax. I'm also convinced this is an alternate origin story for Rogue (of X-Men fame). Each and every word, sentence and thought is tense. I understand that the protagonist, Juliette, is at war with herself (and the world!), but there is no space for the text to simmer. Instead, the narrative boils over each page, filling all space with words and emotions. Time doesn't pass. Seconds are suffocated, minutes are murdered. Um, yikes? It felt overwritten at times, especially with the text breaks and numerical representations of numbers. I get it -- it's quirky. I didn't mind the struck text. Juliette is finding her voice, and it makes me think her story is a bit more reliable. I wanted to like Juliette. I wanted to root for her. The reader is supposed to like Adam, too, I think. I'm suspicious of him, and am secrelt rooting for him to be loyal to Warner. Instead of connecting with Juliette and Adam, I want to learn more about peripheral characters like Warner and Kenji. They are complicated, and each of their motives are murky. Also, what about another female character? So, Kenji is our Logan, Castle is Professor X, and Adam is... Ice Man? Let me know when Phoenix arrives on the scene in book two.

It took a bit of time, at least from this particular volume, to recognize the reasons for Wodehouse's pre-eminance as British Humorist. I still did not find that those reasons were able to upturn Adams or Pope, but Wodehouse has a wit and verve which cannot be denied. What I expected (and eventually got) was a bit of mastery of the art of the ridiculous situation, where the escalation of events and unlikely (but usually, rationally-following) coincidences provides an equal escalation of hilarity. Wodehouse's wordplay is strong, but it is likely that my estimation of him fell in that it was not as strong as the aforementioned authors. I find that the greatest wit and humor comes with that one must work for; a sense that you have shared something with the author: bridged time and space and come to a coy little understanding. For me, the sense of such a wink and nudge which moves even beyond death connects the fundamental tragedy which underlies humor to the absurd tragedy of life, itself. Not everyone needs such bizarre little requirements met, however; nor the ego-stoking of matching wits with some great author. Wodehouse presents little idiomatic tales which achieve the greatest challenge of any author: making pointless drivel seem as important in writing as it is in our everyday lives. In a world where books seem to have the ability to make all-powerful, beautiful, serendipidous, charming gods into boring cliches, he is a welcome refreshment.

This is a crazy adventure book. For the most part I did enjoy reading it, some over-the-top graphic violent scenes written but also so beautiful poetry like lines. In the end I was plan confused about the point of the story. Well at least what I expected to happen to make the point didn't happen, so I don't know what it was all about in the end. Lots of Japanese history put in that also really enjoyed. If the synopses looks at all interesting, I would recommend picking up this book.

I enjoyed this book very much, but it was short. And it was obvious. There were portions that just felt abbreviated and incomplete. Near the end, there is great action as their usually is. But it seems to be cut short, and then you are in the epilogue with no clear picture of how you got there. It works, but it felt choppy, abbreviated, rushed for a publishing deadline maybe. The characters (the people) could have been built a little more. When the book hits the nuts and bolts, it just feels short. There is also a soapbox moment that feels out of place. It's the right spot to have it, but because the characters and the story feel abbreviated, it doesn't feel like it fits. But let me just say, I would love to have a pair of Puzzle and Riddle! Who wouldn't? Wow. Imagination.
