Horan really put together a well-thought out and interesting piece of historical fiction here. The novel centers around Mamah Borthwick, the mistress of Frank Lloyd Wright at the turn of the 20th century. What at first blush sounds like something out of a romance novel or tabloid magazine with some references to architecture thrown in becomes so much more. The novel speaks to one's right to privacy and to an age where feminism is taking stronger roots while women still struggle for the right to vote. Thus, this book becomes important for the way in which it is able to depict this time in history and one women's attempt to live her life within that context. For those of you who don't know much about FLW, don't read anything about him or Mameh on-line or elsewhere. Trust me, the story will play out much better that way. All in all, a fantastic piece of work that I would highly recommend to fans of historical fiction/architecture.

This is an American classic. When I first started the book, I was bored out of my mind. I finally got caught up in it about halfway through, and the ending was totally satisfying. It's rather slow paced, but is also a short read. It's not my favorite book ever, but I was pleasantly surprised.
