Enjoyed this book, it was probably something that I wouldn't have picked out to read at the store or library - it got left behind in my office and I picked it up for something to read while eating lunch. Usually those books read at lunch break take forever to get through .. anyway, I really enjoyed this book it is about a private investigator and the various cases he is working on. It is told from various viewpoints and is woven together with some great underlying humor to result in something that I wasnt expecting. Sometimes it is better to have a low expectation of a book and then be really impressed by it.

** spoiler alert ** I started listening to this book over a year and I stopped because I really didn't like one of the Will's- the grumpy negative one- he was so mean to Maura and everyone. Anyhow fast forward to now and I finished reading the book because I had too for a committee I'm on. Anyhow I'm glad I did while I didn't love the book it was better than I expected. I liked the middle of the book way more than I liked the beginning or the end. When Will Grayson meets Will Grayson it changes both of their lives. I liked how the book was about Will Grayson and Will Grayson- but the story didn't focus on anything between the two instead each one developed relationships/friendships with secondary characters. I thought it was interesting how quickly one will went from completely closeted to being completely out after a turn of events and I wondered if others have moments like that in their lives or not so much. Maura was a really intriguing character to at first you're feeling bad for her and then she does something completely twisted and seemingly cruel and then she's barely a part of the story. I think what I had a hard time with was Naperville Will and how he went from being one super grumpy negative person who didn't share everyone to almost the completely opposite in a matter of pages he's out, he's talking to his mom etc etc.

My head is spinning...disappointed in apparent absence of editorial oversight (did the editor even LOOK at the manuscript?) and as one of Joan Mellen's critics put it, "she threw sentences into the air and didn't care how the words landed" or something to that effect. The author is on the faculty of the English Department at Temple U and spent 7 years investigating the investigation. However, the thread of Jim Garrison's story continues ever slowly to unwind amid a mountain of minutiae, the strangest cast of players ever assembled between two covers, including French Quarter sleaze, cloak and dagger (murderously so) types and NODA staffers and the far reaching enigma of the assassination. My favorite name in the book, one of Jim's investigators: Moo Moo Sciambra.

This is my first Dennis Lehane book and I must say that I was not as impressed as I expected to be. It is in part due to the hype he has received from friend and family (ahem - Mom), as well as his overall fame (especially in the hometown area). I found Lehane to be similar to James Patterson - a bit cheesy with the writing but I was definitely sucked in and desperate to keep reading to find out what would happen next. I found myself completely taken aback with the ending, which left me wondering whether or not I actually liked the book in the end. Nevertheless, Shutter Island was definitely a good thriller that messes with your head, despite how unreal it seemed at times.

I thought this would be too dark for me to stick with, but it's fascinating, narrowing the focus to a minimized world, between a man and his son, in a devastated landscape. It's written almost totally in the moment, and because of that, it flies by. For weeks since reading it, I find that a deadened gray bush or tree always catches my eye. "The Road" it takes you into a completely different world and makes you appreciate the vibrant natural world all around us.
