This book is fascinating but it can get a bit dry if you read it for a while. It is also thick and heavy so it's one of those books you would take to the beach! There are little "chapters" about 3-5 pages about someone famous in history (starting with Ramses the Great). I generally read 1 "chapter" and after that it starts getting tedious.

I've read a lot of fantasy and find much of it to be repetitive of the greatest of the genre. This book was some new ideas (at least to me!) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There's action, adventure, and it's a good, fast read! Try it!

I wanted to see if there were any ideas new to me in this, despite the fact that it is slightly dated. I found it most helpful for the Appendix on the RLG Music Conspectus Lines, even if all libraries don't use them. They will come in handy for the NASM study we have to do this year (sorry, librarian talk).

Continuing on my pursuit of mysteries, I found this when I was trying to find books set in South Carolina. A mystery and a hurricane, and actually - I liked the amateur detective Henrie O. quite a lot, enough to try more books by Hart.

Well, this wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It's more of a collection of short stories, for starters. And when those stories followed characters I hooked into (Benny and Sasha's friends, for example) I loved this book. When it veered off into, say, a chapter on Benny's ex-wife's former boss (the starlet and the dictator - seriously?), I loved it a lot less. And yes, it all dovetails neatly, and the Powerpoint chapter isn't nearly as annoying as I thought it would be. But still. After all the reviews I read, I thought this would be right in my wheelhouse, and instead I was left feeling kind of dissatisfied. The final chapter set in the future felt really unsatisfying to me, even though if Kurt Vonnegut did it, I probably wouldn't have minded. I guess I kept thinking we'd return to Benny and Sasha, or Rhea, or one of the record producer's kids, but maybe I'm just old-fashioned in my tendency to get attached to the characters I meet first. So far I'm still on the hunt for a popular novel written in the last 20 years that I go crazy over. I'll let you guys know when I've found one.

I have enjoyed many of Jennifer Weiner's books and was excited to get my hands on Then Came You. While the novel started out strong, none of the stories climaxed. It seems as though the story dragged along bouncing into each character's present and past and then, running out of time, they were all thrown in to take care of a surrogate baby at the end. It almost felt like the story needed to be wrapped up because of length. I think Weiner's other works take much more care in cohesively building the characters from beginning to end.
