I learned quite a bit from this Newbery-award winner. I learned that tip is an acronym, for instance. I learned that E.L. Koningsburg is a quiet writer with a powerful voice. And I learned that stories can have a happy, predictable ending but still be remarkable stories.

I couldn't decide between 4 or 5 stars. The love story made me roll my eyes a few times, but I still loved the book. It reminded me of Hunger Games. I couldn't put the book down!

August 2011 work book club book. The murder victim - Christopher Thomas is a jerk, selfish and maybe even a bit evil. The introductory author said that the book was just fabulous and each author had crafted their part to excellence. I am not sure how much I agree. I don't plan to add authors to the must read list I keep in my head.

Good read, I like the way she writes.
I've been a fan of Kellerman's Psychologist Alexander Delaware series for many years. I haven't read a book in the series for quite a while. Truth is I got slightly bored with them. Kellerman seemed to be re-telling the same story with different villains. Reading this entry was like renewing acquaintances with an old friend: not necessarily exciting but happily satisfying. The basic plot opens with a young woman, Michaela Brady, who with a male friend, Denis Meserve, pretended to be car-jacked and abducted. Later the story changes when the whole escapade is exposed as a hoax and they are charged with a crime. The Public Defender asks Delaware to do a psychological read on the young woman and eventually the case against her is dismissed. Later her strangled body is found under an overpass in L.A. and Delaware's friend, Detective Milo Sturgis, asks if Delaware wants to get involved as a consultant. He agrees and in the process of trying to solve the case is introduced to the Dowd family, a group of wierdos who live off their inherited wealth. From that point on the focus is on Delaware and Sturgis as they work the case going down a number of blind alleys before figuring out who the real villains are. The interchange between the two is well written and interesting. In a sub-plot Alex and his ex-lover, Robin Castagna, work on putting their relationship back together. I suspect if one hasn't read any of the previous novels in the series that the strength of Delaware's connection to Sturgis, a gay L.A. Homicide Detective, and his on again, off again relationship with Robin might be difficult to grasp. Also there are a few holes in the plot that I didn't see until I finished the book. Aside from the above, I enjoyed the story and can recommend it. Not Kellerman's best work but well worth the time.

This book was recommended to me in connection with slash fiction. I was curious and when I found it at a used book store, bought myself a copy. I can't say that it was bad, but it also wasn't in any way remarkable. In fact, I've mostly forgotten what it was about, except for that weird feeling of London in a drug-incuded haze that I get when I try to remember. No, I didn't read it in London, nor have I read it in any drug-induced haze. And I have no idea if it even takes place in London. Conclusion: will not read again, will not recommend, and shall from now on be wise enough to read the real thing (=slash) in the first place.

This was not one of my favorite Joyce Carol Oates books. I actually did not even finish it.

The book contained a lot of humor and ways to sneak in funny moments. There are also very many serious parts to it.

This was really the first of my brushes with stream-of-consciousness style writing where I didn't say, "NO NO NO BAD HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH FLASHBACKS!" That being said, I'd love to read it again now that I feel like I'm more "literary", and see how I feel about it.
