A fling (short story) with the same characters from Obedience Training. Ian is the alpha of his pack and as alpha he has granted the hand of his sister to hin fiancee: they will mate during the equinox night. But that day Ian is on punishment: because Ian is also a submissive of Khalid, an ancient golem and a sex master. I like very much this couple, and is very funny to read about their relationship after the happily ever after end of the previous novel. In this fling Ian is more self-conscious than in Obidience Training, maybe cause he has accepted his role as alpha, maybe because he is more confident of the love of Khalid. This is the latest installment of the Amelia Peabody series. Amelia and her intrepid husband Emerson travel once again to the Middle East in their excavations. While there, they encounter German spies and cults in an effort to excavate as well as preserve history. This book is a fast paced, enjoyable read. Elizabeth Peters has done a great job as usual.

I read the Dresden story, and the second one, but I leant it to Miss Pottenger before finishing. I mostly got it to read Jim Butcher's story, and I was not dissapointed. The next story was rather dull and not as cool as a Dresden story, so I quit. But if you are a Dresden fan, read this installment (it comes just after book 10).

Although it pulls you into the story really well, by about half way it made me want to slit my wrists. The author obviously has a very low opinion of both women and men. Perhaps someone else can finish it but I can't.

A curious book. The title character's story gets submerged in a story about the marriage of Levin and subplots about various other characters, many of who have little or no contact with AK. Things stop periodically for descriptions of local election practices, snipe hunting, and wheat harvesting. For a finish Tolstoy spends the 30 pages on Levin's understanding of the Meaning of Life, an understanding that is directly contradictory to AK's understanding. While the book tends to meander from scene to scene and the characters often come across as simpletons, every so often Tolstoy takes a turn and everything becomes very complex. Part of the greatness of the book, I suspect, comes from the tendency of the characters to take over from Tolstoy and create lives that don't fit his didactic molds. In any case, a book that lives up to its reputation.
