Extremely well written for an Economist and really appeals to the mainstream. You really do have to wonder about some of the factors he found a correlation between as they may (and probably do) mean nothing at all. The section on how Roe v. Wade led to lower crime rates in the 1990s is especially interesting and will leave you pondering the possibility for long after you have finished.

Sooooo snoozeworthy! Ok, but definitely not my favorite read ever. I especially thought the servant was a doof.

I didn't read this book in high school and have just felt like it's one I should read to gain a greater appreciation of American history. But I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did! The writing is incredible, and I love the way Steinbeck tells the story and simultaneously gives historical context for the characters. The Joad family is so real that I just fell in love with them, and felt like I understood everything they did. I look forward to reading this one again in a few years!

Pretty dense overall, but I remember coming away with a feeling that I had gained understanding by reading it.

An old title that I first read as a teenager and still re-read regularly. Its one of the best historical novels around and the one that started my interest in the genre.

Karen mentiioned wanting prose that puts its arms around you, well, this prose grabs you and takes you right into Dostoevsky's world. His strength in recreating actual dialogue -- and changing the styles of speaking of different characters -- plays the largest role in absorbing the reader. At least that's it for me. Not that the secriptive language is wanting in any way. It's not. But this is a spoken novel. The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is especially fine with the dialgogue. Instead of just translating the sense of what each character says, they translate the tone of voice, the verbal idiosycnracies. For instance, when Roghozin, a perpetually dissatisfied, but sadly-in-love-with-the-wrong-girl guy, kvetches to the Prince (who is called the Idiot, but isn't an idiot) "She gave her maid Katya a scarf of mine that, even if she lived in luxury, she never maybe saw the like." I can hear this guy' kvetching when he says that, especially from that misplaced maybe and the emphatic even if she lived in luxury (or how about, "It's a strange riddle for me why she's marrying you" This slightly non-idiomatic English isn't seen elsewhere in the writing. That is, P & V write impeccable English, but kow when not to be impeccable. The dialogue throughout sounds exactly like my Russian speaking family's kvetching, declaiming, arguing, discussing all of the time. Beware. That's what Doestoevsky's Russians do. And the unlikeliest people suddenly start explaining themselves, their thoughts, their motivations, and others listen. So do I. I love it. I'll read it again, I know. Incidentally, Dostoevsky had a big influence on the early 20th century novelists like Joyce and Woolf and you can see why in this novel.

Sort of "hard-boiled detective novel" with elements of urban magic. The series starts out a bit rough; he hits the "detective novel" bit pretty well in this book, but the magic isn't really well-explained. (See Sanderson's First Law). This series is unusual in that the quality of the books gets better later in the series. The characters have solid story-arcs which actually grow through each book; he's up to book ten and is still going strong so far.

I really enjoyed this story. The lead characters were not the same as the first book in the series, Havemercy, but since it's been so many years since I read that book, I found that it was actually refreshing, because I didn't need to remember much detail about those characters to follow the story. I thought the characterization that went into this book was top notch fun. It followed 4 very distinctly different characters, which--while at first was a smidgeon confusing--eventually became very satisfying, watching each character's version of events unfold. I think I liked this book better than the first. Includes an excerpt from the next book, which follows different characters again. It was interesting enough that I will definitely read it as soon as possible.
