I read this before the scandal broke, but you can tell it's largely fictional. Many of the events just don't have the vibe of realism. But if you accept it as fiction, it's a great book on addiction. It's also one of the saddest books I've ever read, if not the saddest.

I did not enjoy it as much as The Black Robe, but overall thought the book was very good. I thought it was a bit long winded in parts and skipped over information in other parts. The characters were rich and well developed.

In no fashion do I feel any sympathy at all for the lady of the house. She's thoughtless and careless and carries more than a little of the aura of entitlement. She doesn't seem too remorseful either. The hero of our story, while also being by no means a perfect person, doesn't deserve the fate he is apparently left to. Easy to read.
