good story. I thought it might have been just a little too long, and not too much happens (not that this fact makes any story for the worse)... Beautifully written, even in translation. I feel like i would have enjoyed it more in original language...but thats not possible. i dont speak spanish.

I've read this book before and I was so excited to be able to go back and reread it. I found I'd forgotten most of the plot points so it was almost like reading it for the first time again. I adore the way this is written. I often have problems with first-person narration but obviously there was no other way this story could go, and Haddon avoided many of the pitfalls of first-person by making this a book that Christopher was writing himself (to me it sounds so artificial the way first-person narration seems to be talking into the ether). It also allowed for a nice balance between too much exposition and not enough, because Christopher was aware that people would be jumping into the middle of his story and would need the background information. The asides he made and his interest in math and science were great ways to let us into his mindset, showing not telling. It was a somewhat sad book, because it seems a bit like Christopher ended up in the same place he started from. But then I remember the victories he achieved along the way, and how he now knows he can do things he didn't think he could before.

Pedro is on the basketball team and decides to run for class president against one of his teammates, Ned. Ned is far more outgoing and seems to be successful at everything he does. Ned doesn't like that Pedro is running against him and takes it out on Pedro in subtle ways on the basketball court. Pedro's father, an immigrant from Mexico is very proud of his son. I am sure that basketball fans will enjoy this book, but I couldn't get too excited about it. I thought that the book tried too hard to make the points that the author wanted to get across. There wasn't anything subtle about it.
