Cover - by Anne Cain; beautiful; slightly misleading MC's - Alex, a vampire who is giving up the Life, which means he's staying more human than not. The story is told from his 3rd person POV. Alex moves to a secluded mountain home and Tate is his only neighbor. Werewolves, a small pack of 4, are Alex's friends, which goes against the traditional vampire way. During the course of the story, Alex realizes that he hasn't really gotten to know the wolves very well, and his discovery - often with Tate's involvement - of their back-stories or aspects of their personalities was a clever way to develop these characters and make them distinctive. I liked all of them. Almost all of the action takes place at Alex's house, which in less talented hands might get tedious, but there is so much going on that the house stands solid at the center. The house is old, and needs a lot of fixing-up; it's surrounded by woods, which provide a new hunting ground for the weres. The basic plot conflict revolves around Alex warming to Tate despite his wish not to. Alex is a vampire, he's got a dangerous ex out in the world somewhere, he himself is dangerous, his best friends are werewolves, etc. He doesn't want to expose Tate - who is a very nice, funny, smart and tenacious guy - to all of this. The thing I like about this was that it could have easily devolved into a lot of angst and internal monologue, but it didn't. Sarah Madison knows just how to convey this without beating it over our heads. Tate manages to get under Alex's skin anyway, and does so without doing anything stupid or over the top. The sex in the story is just right, with a believable build-up. It's very hot when they do get together. One of the wolves, Peter, gets hurt while hunting, and the pack ends up staying with Alex while he heals. This leads to the many complications that make the story entertaining. The appearance of Peter's sister was the one element I wasn't happy with - she seemed extraneous to me. The climax was exciting. I did see it coming, but that did not lessen my enjoyment one bit.

Important but boring, as I recall.

I can't decide if this book is completely blasphemous or if it's amazingly devout and spiritual... Probably a little bit of both! "American Gods" refers to *all* of the various gods brought to America by the peoples, cultures, and ethnic groups who've come to this country over time -- as well as the new gods of television, the internet, etc. What happens to the gods we have created when we no longer believe in them? A unique look at belief, and taking responsibility for your beliefs, because belief is what constructs reality. Probably a book to avoid if you would be offended by the notion that people create gods through belief, and that the gods of all cultures -- if they are not being actively worshipped -- could be relegated to driving cabs, picking fights in bars, and living in the slums.

This book deserves five stars for citing the illustrious Charles Clay Doyle, America's foremost authority on cannibalism in dead grandmother myths and the leading contributor to my refrigerator magnet collection.

Cute short stories, but not to be confused with children bedtime stories

This is kind of like The Pigman, except with a woman. Good stuff. As usual, Zindel isn't condescending to his readers. I really, really appreciate him.

A thinly-veiled exploration of the author's (non)relationship with his Boomer parents ala Proust, via the biblical story of Noah. It has its moments, but has a tendency to come off as feeling a little cleverer and smarter than it really is. Also recommended by Dave Eggers, which is generally a non-starter for me. On the whole, I feel the entire 615 page exercise might have been avoided by a timely hug from the author's mom.

Heart-wrenching and by far one of the best adaptations to film I have enjoyed.
