This book was so good...I thought that I knew what there was to know about John Wayne Gacy, but I learned some things I wasn't aware of...and I was shocked about. This book was in depth and well written and I look forward to reading another book by this author. Clifford L. Linedecker told a great deal of background about Gacy and even about a handful of his victims. He told the good as well as the bad and I really liked that. I also learned a lot about how Chicago (parts of it) was back in the 70's. Things that I was also shocked to learn about. Kind of scary in fact and it makes me cringe wondering how bad it must be now! If you like true crime books you need to pick this one up. Even if you think you know the story of Gacy you may learn some more things like I did.

See my review of The Boelyn Girl. The same situation is at play here. I love it, but that's because I'm nutty for this stuff. I feel awful for Lady Jane, but she annoys me with her self-righteous "I'm right about God and everyone else is wrong" attitude. That doesn't mean I think what Mary did to her was right, though. The poor girl was used and abused by her amoral family and power-hungry social strivers.

Engrossing, enjoyable story. Quite enjoyed the multiple narration of historical characters, but always coming back to the contemporary story of the woman whose ancestors they are. I've never read any James Fenimore Cooper, so I'm sure it would lend a whole other layer of enjoyment if I had, but it was quite intriguing on its own. And the main character is my favorite kind of protagonist -- the kind that reminds me in many ways of myself, despite quite different circumstances.

The setting of Mississippi in the Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love suggests the themes of absurdity and the grotesque subjects present in the fiction of O’Connor and Faulkner. It could bring to mind the mental pictures of lynchings and good ol’ boys swigging beer and beating their wives. The book could have discussed the dark history of slavery and sexism peculiar to the Southern United States. Instead, it allows the ridiculous element existent in all human relationships and cultures to be examined with humor and candor. Most would find the manner in which the narrator speaks raunchy, but it is actually no different from the conversations one could hear in a beauty shop or family kitchen full of female relations and friends. Women tend to say and share things with each other that would never be brought up in mixed company. The book’s bawdy dialogues are probably meant to be helpfuland easily absorbed by all within a listening distance.

Wow. Very good book. Interesting self-narrative style. Could relate with both so little and so much of what the main character went through, felt, experienced, and viewed things. There was one sentence which had really imitated me, unfortunately that book is now being on loan to Jillian in PA. Reason I gave it 4 1/2 stars was that I was not satisfied with how the book ended. I would've appreciated knowing a little more of what kind of person James ended up being. Then again, internet, as always, for this book's another "autobiography."

I was never an actual fan of Danielle Steel. I only read 3 of her books before Silent Honour and was not particularly super impressed. However, I stumbled upon this book during a book sale and because it fell under the label of historical fiction thought I'd give it a go. Now that I have finished it, I can say that I'm glad I did so. At first, I was kind of sceptic about it. The diction seemed kind of juvenile especially when compared to the witty diction used by John Grogan in Marley and Me, my previous read. However, as I immersed myself into the story, I found the diction very comfortable and flowing to read, and I would have finished it sooner hadn't I enjoyed the story so much that I did not want it to end (I willingly dragged the story myself :P) I love how Steel tackled the themes of love, rejection and racism in the story and although the story's period is too contemporary for my taste, I was really into it. It was interesting to get a different side of Pearl Harbor's story and I thoroughly enjoyed the insights, Steel gave into the Japanese world. I found myself emphatising greatly with the character especially with Hiroko and even shed a few tears at some of the poignant moments. All in all, I really enjoyed the book and will definitely add any of Danielle Steel's historical fiction to my growing to-be-read list anytime soon.

You know when you tell someone about something that's bugging you and they don't really get it? This was the opposite of that for me. YMMV.
A not-so-interesting account of his walk through Afghanistan. A little ancient history is included. I stopped after about 80 pages.

For me The Wizard of Oz will always be about silver shoes and towns full of china. I loved being read this book when I was really little and I loved rereading it when I grew older. L Frank Baum's words transport you into the world of his imagination and that world is trancendant.
