I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I do not think I would recommend the book for younger children. I think it is appropriate for young adults (14+). I found the characters endearing and interesting. I look forward to reading any further adventures Gaiman may have for Nobody Owens in the future.

I'll admit, the fact that this book came out on my 30th birthday and quite literally saved my from wallowing in my own despair may have had an effect on my rating. But I loved the whole series, I loved this book, and I still do. I also still need an entire box of Kleenex to get through it.

Read this for some research--and it served its purpose. I learned a lot about the lobster fishing industry from an island richly steeped in its history. The story was ok at times. I appreciate learning about the perspective of this simple lifestyle. I am also newly aware of another culture who appreciates the balance between give and take of humans and their environment. The book paints a great picture of this contrast of care (by the islanders, who must sustain their livelihoods) and disregard by the industrial fishermen, who can merely move elsewhere once they have squeezed what they can from the area. :(

I'm a bit prejudiced when it comes to books by Tamora Pierce as I have always loved her work, which I started reading when I was 12. This story is told in two volumes, the first of which is Trickster's Choice. The protangonist is young Aliane, a young lady of a rather priveleged upbringing, being the child of a spymaster and a lady knight. Through a series of god-inspired events she finds herself alone in a new country that is preparing for civil war. If you like spy novels you'll enjoy the crafty intrigues of gods and mortals in this tale of political intrigue, family, and survival.

Harding did a great job of creating a rich world full of fleshed-out and interesting characters. However, this book was about twice as long as it should have been. Sporadic somber moments seemed out of place amongst the light jovial tone, and I could have done without the 9/11 reference. Considering how many parallels there were to various Shakespeare plays, I'm not sure why he chose to have a character trying to translate Hamlet; it would have been neat if the focus were on a play that the characters were more closely, but unintentionally, acting out.
