where would the world of english literature be without Virginia Woolf? i for one find her utterly inspiring. i could read this book again and again, and find new levels and meanings every single time. her thoughts about time, consciousness, the city all mingle about in a glorious stew of words and punctuation. i think she is very much a style that you either welcome or find hard to take in.

I really enjoyed this book. If even a quarter of the intrigue and back-stabbing of the type described on every page of this novel really happened in ancient Roman imperial life, then it was a spectacularly fascinating and frightening corner of human history. You'd think it would be good to be the Emperor, but maybe not so much... The one minor thing that didn't care for so much was actually probably a very important stylistic point of Graves' here: they way that the novel, which covered an enormous amount of time and people and events, was written in a fairly dry and "historical" form by Claudius. While this allowed him to cover many of the important events from the the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula, it meant that a lot of the emotion, dialogue, and character development that you usually find in a novel (as opposed to a history) really wasn't there. While I still loved the book, I think this aspect of it simply means that I'll have to read some other historical fiction of Rome to find out more about what the details of real life there were like. A great book, though. I will definitely be reading the sequel,

I'm not normally a big self-help reader. Not that I think there's anything wrong with reading self-help books or anything; they just aren't normally what I pick up off the shelf. However, I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone going through a serious (or even not so serious) loss. It was recommended to me by a dear friend, and I'm so thankful. The best thing I can say about this book is that as I read it, I kept thinking, "Yes. Yes! That is exactly how I'm feeling, but I just couldn't put words to it." I laughed, I cried, I felt less like a crazy person.

I just wish Sharpe actually did all these things. I am always surprised at the end to find he is still fictional though most of the story is historically factual.

I thought that it was great that he incorporated one of his previous books, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in this book. That was so cleaver and no one would have caught that if they didn't know that Roald Dahl also wrote that book.
