A very interesting compilation of letters both online and off, typed and handwritten, all saying no. Some of these were real heartbreakers, especially the relationship-enders. But what sticks in my head is the email near the end, that says "I don't have any rejection letters in my possession and it's not becuase I always have excelled at everything I've done, I think it's because I haven't put myself out there enough -- haven't taken enough chances." This makes me feel like I need to get some rejection letters too! Includes a Postscript about "what happened after the rejection?" that is both satisfying and sad to read.

Listen up people! There is a reason why this book has so many raving reviews, it is simply gorgeous. When I finished it I actually sat for a whole 30 minutes in the same exact spot thinking about the book, and all that I took from it. That's how great it's impact was on me. The story is like a block of wood that you see has the potential to be something beautiful. The carpenter (the author) chips away slowly and deliberately. Doing a through job of sanding the wood down until finally you get the exquisite piece of art. This book reminded me a lot about that process. Everything about it made so much sense to me. It's like everything clicked. This book isn't packed with action, but with truth. There is so much to say about it but you really have to read it. Terra is one of the most real main characters I have encountered. Jacob (the love interest) is so painfully great it hurts. And there is an equally great supporting cast surrounding these two people. You get to see a tiny glimpse of Syrah (from Girl Overboard , another great one from Justina Chen Headley) and see how things worked out for her. Before I read this book I had no idea about geocaching (way cool hobby),which plays a very big role in this story. From start to finish this story was perfect, or how the author would say perfectly and beautifully flawed.

New Rules of High School started out strong and then it felt like Nelson just gave up. It follows Max through his senior year of high school. Max is the editor of the school paper, the perfect student, perfect son with a perfect girlfriend. One day he decides to break up with his girlfriend for no clear reason, but that it just didn't feel right anymore - which is fine. Then he starts hanging out with downtown club kids, getting drunk and crashing his car, and losing his virginity to a girl he doesn't even like. It almost felt like the boy version of Nelson's "Girl" - which was my favorite book through high school. Except girl is fully formed and follows the characters through their relationships and struggles until Andrea, the main character comes to a new understanding about herself. In New Rules I think Nelson wants this to happen - characters are introduced - but they never go anywhere. It's unclear why we're supposed to assume certain characters have had any impact on Max because it doesn't seem like they have much of a relationship. There wasn't any character development. I feel like what he was trying to get across is that things that happen in high school don't matter so much once you leave high school. Max's life seems to be self destructing and his parents keep telling him he's ruining all of his chances for a good college and a good life. But it doesn't build to that or show us how Max comes to under stand that. It just ends in what feels like it should be the middle of the book and then he tacked an epilogue on the end that was a little contrived and said basically that two years later everything worked out and things that happen in high school don't really matter anyway.

I love that Gin finally closed the loop with Donovan. That was an unresolved relationship that I'm glad we closed the book on. Part of me was still a little sad that Donovan never "got" it like Bria eventually did, but at least Gin got closure.
