I really enjoyed this book. I think some people might think that "free-range" means "lazy parenting" but she talks specifically about how free-range does NOT mean hands-off. This book reminded me that the point of parenting is to raise an ADULT, someone who can function on their own and doesn't need to have their hand held throughout their adult life. That takes a lot more work than just shadowing your child and taking care of all their needs 100% of the time. Of course, people who are true helicopter parents probably will roll their eyes at this book and get all worked up about how they are better parents because of their parenting techniques.

Ava is a mother a friend a daughter and a wife, but she has lost herself, fussing over her father Charlie (a wonderful character) her two daughters, not to mention holding down a job and seeing less of her husband. Something happens which forces things to change. Hilarious in places, was sorry the book ended i couldn't put it down.

The story revolved around a Japanese American family and their life before, during and after being interned in the camps during WWII. The author referred to the main characters not by their names but the "boy, girl, mother, and father" which was different. I was not that impressed with this book as it did not go into much more detail.
