It makes you realise that a lot of people in the past made huge sacrifices so that we can now enjoy rights that are often taken for granted. Wonderful book and vintage Steinbeck. If you liked The Grapes of Wrath, you'll love this one.

Best thing learned from this book? Hitchcock gets way too much credit as seen in a dissection of the screenplay of North By Northwest. The immortal crop dusting scene is in the original screenplay by Ernest Lehman, literally shot for shot. Point being, directors more often than not are big ass credit hogs. Stupid auteur theory...

A lovely animal fantasy story, similar basis to Brian Jacques Redwall series - a bit like a combination of Redwall and Robin Hood really. Obviously this is targetted towards the young adult readership, but I do feel it is a little over simplified in places - such as how the sheriff is always on their tail on their quests, but when the weasels are home in half moon wood having loud celebrations, he's somehow never around hmm. I'm also not that impressed with how rats are made out to be evil creatures as it does conform to a stereotype and may leave a lasting impression on oung children reading the book, who are already told by society at large that rats aren't nice animals. It would be nice for a book like this to paint rats in a good light. Other than that this book was a good heart warming read.

3.5 stars What I like about this book is I couldn't predict who was going to die and who was going to survive. And that made the story quite unpredictable. However, I kind of disappointed that there is no explanation about how the magic worked. That sometimes made me couldn't predict or think about what going to happend by logic. Still, this book still has quite a nice story. *Btw, I like V better than Doll Girl....*

Loved this book. Its written for the younger crowd and based on a true story of a family captured by Native Americans and sold into slavery to the British. Before I read this book, I didn't have a clue that this was apart of the history. It's incredible, the lack of my knowledge, I know. A family of white settlers survives the Indians capture, sold into British slavery, half are thrown in the stockades, and then their journey home. It held my attention several reads through, and its one I'll recommend to my own kids when they're older.
