read the first third or so of sara's copy borrowed from zoe during breaks from the writing retreat. (it was, in fact, the first thing sara said to me when she got off the plane: "You have to read this Jay-Z book.") bought it on kindle but haven't yet made my way through the rest of it (and have to admit, sort of wish i'd sprung for the hard copy, because it was BEAUTIFUL). but even that first section blew my fucking mind. equally a book about art, creation, writing, music and survival. poetic and sincere. one of the best books i've even started to read about art in a long long time.

All of Amy Tan's books have the same basic plot. Yawn.

Maybe my new favorite poet of sardonic pessimism.

The beginning of the end. (Fans of Binchy's earlier works will know exactly what I mean.)

A very well-written and readable book on a understudied area of history. In researching my senior paper, I've come across the same themes over and over again in works dealing with the heroic outlaw, and this one was no exception, save for one thing: All of the other sources save for a few cited this one. Enjoyable read with very funny anecdotes thrown in that made me laugh out loud. Extremely well researched and a great starting point for anyone interested in outlaw history.

Don't know if I'm overly picky or deeply discerning but I simply didn't give a hoot about these characters. I didn't feel they were very well-developed and couldn't have cared less about what could or would happen to them. Disappointing....

I read this book when I was the YW president and the whole time I kept thinking "I can't believe she is writing this book for teenage girls!" Seriously I didn't want all the YW to think about sex with all the references in the book. I just finished re-reading this book 02/01/11 and thought it summarizes everything it needs to complete the series or saga. I wanted to re-read it since the movie is coming out this year. Bella drives me crazy sometimes but that is in all the books. I love how all of these books take me to another place and let me experience life in another world with vampires and wolves. I didn't feel as upset about her references to sex like I did before but yikes--why did she have to put some of that in there for teens to be thinking about anyways. I sure hope the movie is clean. :)

Steam Queen isn't your traditional steampunk novel, instead moving the genre out of the usual Victorian setting and instead focussing on a more 1920's type era with heavy influences from the Old West. It makes for a really unique and interesting setting for the novel. The world is imaginative. Railway lines are used as the main form of transport, criss-crossing across Europe to connect the many small towns and villages that litter the landscape. Europe is a dangerous place with bandits and mercenaries using mercenaries as weapons of war. The story follows a girl from England joining one of these mercenary teams and getting drawn into a conflict between two factions. The conflict itself is intriguing, a clash of cultures between the steam users of St Vith and the diesel users of Winterscheid. The most intriguing thing about this is that there is no clear right or wrong side. Both sides are as bad as each other, commiting evil acts in an attempt to gain victory. Erica is the main character of Steam Queen and I found her to be amazing. In many ways the reader should hate her. She is a nasty piece of work, assaulting others on the slightest whim. She is wrote in such a way however that you can't help but root for her, despite her cruel personality. Steam Queen is quite a short novel but full of action and is well worth picking up.
Excellent sense of eloquent language and narrative flow; interestingly fractured chronology challenging interplay between the narrator's and the reader's impression of characters, people in general, and New York City.
