This is a very good sociology book on how evangelical America is just as divided (if not more) by race and socio-economics. It is a sharp criticism of the American church, of its racism and bias towards class and ethnicity. Truly a wake up call for anyone who says they're a follower of Jesus.

This book isn't as astounding as the previous books. Joey still struggles with his ADHD, but his parents, including his once responsible mother, behave ridiculously — without any concern for their son. It's a new twist in Joey's life, but it makes me wonder if Gantos is running out of material.

I loved the premise behind the novel whereby the main character reads an apparently cursed book (the only copy left) and is transported into a new world. Readers with an interest in quantum physics and thought experiments may have particular interest, but those without (myself included) are not left feeling inadequate. I found it a thoroughably enjoyable science fiction adventure and finished it off within two days!

Very quick read. I have been signing with my baby since birth (just the word "nurse"). As a preschool teacher I really believe that speech and signing helps bridge language differences, helps young children with reading readiness (e.g. the manual alphabet), and creating a "quiet" time or voice. As a parent of a 10 month old who likes to sit and be cute... It's a different story. My son can sign the word "nurse" (while he nurses) and "more" (though he usually grunts or cries). He understands more signs than he communicates...

"You ask me how I became a madman. It happened thus: One day, long before many gods were born, I woke from a deep sleep and found all my masks were stolen, the seven masks I have fashioned an worn in seven lives, I ran maskless through the crowded streets shouting, "Thieves, thieves, the cursed thieves." Men and women laughed at me and some ran to their houses in fear of me. And when I reached the market place, a youth standing on a house-top cried, "He is a madman." I looked up to behold him; the sun kissed my own naked face for the first time. For the first time the sun kissed my own naked face and my soul was inflamed with love for the sun, and I wanted my masks no more. And as if in a trance I cried, "Blessed, blessed are the thieves who stole my masks." Thus I became a madman.

merton is a french-american beat-turned-catholic-monk in kentucky. milosz is an exiled polish hero/national poet doing a professorship at berkley. merton writes milosz to compliment him on a book of his he's read, and they begin a 10 year correspondence (until merton's death), a beautiful correspondence that touches on everything from father zosima to liturgy to authoritarian rule to how television causes ADD to simon weil and camus and to readings of job.
don't judge! Not the best writing but entertaining for what it is - I consider books like this one soap operas for book junkies.

I fully expected this to be a standard Gothic thriller with a love story. However, while it was that, it was far from standard. Yes, the tale is somewhat predictable, but what makes this stand out is Shield's ability to pull together a beautifully toned story that seamlessly transitions from past to present as the narration changes from Evie's point of view to Agnes's. The depth of the characters, and Shield's decision to make Sebastian an un-predictable love interest pull this story together making it stand out from the rest. I liked the narration of the audiobook which held me even though I listened to it sporadically. With two characters, Evie and Agnes, being so similar, yet from different time periods, it could have been easy to be lost as the narration transitions back and forth, but Shield's superb writing allowed for a powerful reading that keeps you coming back for more. I know that I would have had a hard time putting the book down if I had read it in that format. I've also added the other novels in the series to my reading list, but this book can stand on its own, and I do not feel left hanging having not read the others. It's a bit heavy and deep at times, so not particularly a light summer read, but as the weather gets cooler, it's a good book to keep in mind when you want to curl up with a good book.
