This a fascinating book, not just because of the singularly strange tale it tells, but because of its place in the history of science fiction literature. In fact, it's barely science fiction at all- most early science fiction took a central premise or technology, and extrapolated a plot from there- a time machine, an invasion from Mars, a trip to the Moon, but here, David Lindsay seems less concerned with exploiting any scientific principles and more with exploring ideas and philosophies. The book does include a trip to another planet, but the means of transport is delightfully absurd- something about using a jar full of "back rays" (light rays that travel back to their source,apparently) to power a rocket car. In fact, I was reminded less of Verne or Wells and more of the weird tales of Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Instead of ancient horrors or grotesque creatures, however, Lindsay uses his strange land for discussions of gender identity and the nature of good and evil. While I feel that this is an unjustly overlooked classic of the genre, it is not hard to understand why it is not championed along with more widely-known works. It does not have a clear narrative drive that propels much of pulp science fiction. This is not a weakness, as I found its meandering plot fascinating, even though, at times, the strange characters on display seem abstract to the point of allegory, even though I sometimes felt I lacked the key to what they might represent. Even though it can be difficult to penetrate just what Lindsay is getting at, this was a fascinating glimpse at an early science fiction that stands apart- it has no antecedents or imitators; a wholly original work.

I was very excited to read this as I won the ARC here on Goodreads...my first win! I will start off saying that this is not something I would normally be drawn to. However, I really did enjoy it. This is a true storytellers story. I found the whole reality of what these people lived through fascinating. I think we all take for granted the many aspects of modern day life. I am not so sure I could handle everything this family lived through. I found Alexi Zentner's writing to be beautiful and heartbreaking. My only complaint really and the reason for my 3.5 star rating? I found the bouncing back and forth between the generations to be a little distracting at times. There were many times I had to really stop and think about who Stephen, the narrator, was talking about. I do recommend you give this one a read though. It is a truly beautiful, fascinating, heartbreaking tale.

Heck uzun bir kitap, başka şeyler okumak için yarı yolda bırakmak zorunda kaldı. Önceki cildi tekrar okumamıştım ama iyi bir özetleme yapıyor. Uzun kazılar ve yan geziler bol, ancak ilginç sonuçlarla. Kvothe'yi ünlü yapan bazı bölümleri göreceğiz. İyi dünya yapımı ve iyi öngörü. Okuması kolay olmasına rağmen ana karakteri çok sevmiyorum. Cthaerh (sp?) İle gerçekten temiz bir kötü adam. Şu anki şeyler / çerçeveleme hikayesi hala ilginç (Chronicler karakterini seviyorum).
