From the very first sentence I was in thrall. Ann Patchett is a lyrical writer. I felt rocked and lulled by this story - there is just something about her writing that is soothing and calming. And the book is about being taken hostage!

Worth reading, though I wouldn't imagine most people would be willing to slog through it.

A sweet little locked room mystery starring one of my all-time favorite characters, Bernie Rhodenbarr. I am not generally a fan of short stories, but this one was extremely self-contained and a lot of fun. Basically, I'll take any Rhodenbarr I can get. However, Lawrence Block packs a lot into a small package here and does it masterfully. My only regret? I want more.

This is not my type of book at all, but several people recommended it to me, and since I was not a part of the Harry Potter or Twilight book to movie phenomenom, I decided to give this series a try. I thought the first 100 pages were unnecessary. I would have much rather had more character development and back story than read about the process of preparing the tributes for the Games. It was drawn out, and if Collins was trying to build tension and anticipation, it didn't work. Once the Games began it got much more interesting and easier to read. I feel horrible saying this though, since the book sets it up so you're wondering who is going to die next. The outcome was rather predicatble, but Collins tried to throw in a few twists here and there. When she would try to surprise you though it was as if she'd go back and say "just kidding!" The biggest attempt at a twist (spoilers) is when they change the number of winners from one to two, then it's just one again, then two. Seriously? The set up for the second book in the series is kind of blah to me. I'm more intrigued to see what will happen when she is reunited with her family and Gale.

I have difficulty recommending this novel wholeheartedly. It's certainly rich with sensory details and characters who had me hooked by Chapter 4. But I can't escape the feeling that the ending was too rushed. Lily was perhaps the least convincing character of the novel because she was the most perfect: she lived up to the expectations that men in 19th Century China had shackled women against. Perhaps she was making a comment on the minuscule nature of women in that time: the best were those who said little and who were the most tirelessly loyal and fragile until death. Snow Flower had once told her how she regretted being "born wrong." Doubtless, this is a fantastic book club pick. I couldn't help but think about the ways women today are limited consciously or unconsciously by the expectations of a patriarchal society.

The man was a true hero, but as a chronicler of Gettysburg, Chamberlain resorts to the same flowery language and Biblical metaphors that hampered many a writer of his time.

another need to re-read - i remembered loving this book
Laugh out loud hilarious. You have to like or at least be familiar with Jane Austen to appreciate it.
