Well this was a great recommendation from Maya. I enjoyed reading this book and about Babbitt's ups and downs. And while the language will remind you that you're in the 20s, as expressions like "He's a corker" and "Go to the devil!" are not used anymore, his sentiment and the whole middle class/suburban angst, aspirations and need to fit in proper groups appears to have not changed. We find Babbitt unhappy with who he is and getting validation from his best buddy Paul, who feels the same. Then Babbitt tries to be more than elevate his social standing, escape his stifling family and society through rebellion against the status quo. On the whole it's just clear that poor Babbitt is just a weak man. I think Lewis does a great job of portraying Babbitt and the narrow world in which he lives and the story is still relevant today. This was my favorite passage from the book: "As he approached the office he walked faster and faster, muttering, 'Guess better hustle.' All about him the city was hustling, for hustling's sake. Men in motors were hustling to pass one another in a the hustling traffic. Men were hustling to catch trolleys, with another trolley a minute behind, and to leap from the trolleys, to gallop across the sidewalk, to hurl themselves into buildings, into hustling express elevators...Among them Babbitt hustled back to his office, to sit down with nothing much to do except see that they staff looked as though they were hustling."

At a small East Coast college, Richard becomes intrigued by a group of five students who make up the Greek program. They don't interact much with the rest of the student body, which Richard finds magnetic and intimidating. Having taken some Greek in high school, he eventually makes their acquaintance and gains admittance into their elite and sequestered circle. While these students are bright, interesting, and generally well-off, they also have some dark secrets to deal with...and Richard gets roped into the mysteries as well. While it took me forever to finish reading, this book is pretty engaging.

Beautiful, pithy gems from one of my all-time favorite authors. I frequently laughed out loud, and annoyed many people by reading excerpts.

I think that it is of questionable use as history, but it does provide a fascinating glimpse of Mitford's mind (and she would not like people saying that). Louis XV is clearly the Colonel, and Pompadour is You-know-who. My favorite review of this when it came out stated that "Miss Mitford must try harder not to refer to Louis XV as "perfect HEAVEN!" every time she mentions his name." A very good read.

Everyone should read these books...to see how some people are forced to live. It will open your eyes to sorrow and pain, as well as add insights into why people behave the way they do.

I have always been conflicted about Hemingway. He is by all accounts an amazing writer- his work can be read and reread and still yield as much on 20th read as it did on the first time, not that I could ever bring myself to read Hemingway 20 times. The trouble for me is content. In my well-read, feminist, but hard to offend opinion he is a chauvinist, pretentious bastard; however, he is also one of the greatest writers of the the twentieth century and even I would love to be able to have half of his prudence when it comes to prose writing. This conflict of mine is never more hightened than when I read 'A Movable Feast'. As Hemingway's autobiography it is both beautifully written and highlights what an asshole this guy really was. It's so full of macho bullshit sometimes that I have to focus on what he his words and style purely because he is such a dick! PS- sorry about the swearing, but he genius masked behind a pig makes me angry!

I think this might be my favorite book of all time. There may be sentimental reasons for this; it was one of my first "adult" books, and I read it at a time when I still harbored fantasies about becoming an actress. That being said, it's one of the most heart-rending love stories I've ever read--chock full of unrequited passion.

This is closer to a 5 then a 4, but I can't give a 4.75. :) This is my favorite Chopin piece. It's a story that I will never forget and refer to often.

Aslında bunu bitirmedim. Yine de okuduklarımı beğendim. Onu eğlenceli bir şekilde okurken biraz kötüydüm! Gelecekte tekrar almayı planlıyorum.
