Interestingly, Hindu fundamentalists have been as much a problem as the Hindu-Muslim divide. Clearly, Gandhi's secular republic has lost its impact as a model. Author wrote for the Financial Times, married to an Indian, supportive in general of Indian progress.

Very interesting book if you like to know a character inside and out, know their every thought and feeling, and keep track of family and friend connections. I found this book involved and sometimes difficult to read. I had to reread some chapters to gain understanding. I did like this book.

I heard her interviewed on the Living Writers podcast and was struck by her memories of the Challenger exploding - she was born the same year I was, so they were similar memories. But she takes it deeper into the company town atmosphere surrounding NASA in the 80's and a nice "coming of age" story to parallel it, much more interesting than most "coa" stories I've read. Worth checking out.

Apart from presenting a plausible history of the madwoman in Jane Eyre, I don't see the literary significance of this novel. It is difficult to read, required me to backtrack many times, and in the end is simply uninteresting. On to something better :-)

Actually I was prepared not to like it and I would probably have given it 4.5 stars. It starts out very dark and disturbing. Four young men take their friend out for his stag party. Michael is a prankster and their plan to get back at him is to bury him alive, but only for a couple of hours. On the way to the next pub they are all killed in a car accident and then the evil unfolds layer by layer until the end of the book.

This book was difficult to start. It took me two times before I was "hooked." It was an easy read, but it was also emotionally draining. Both the lives of Clare and Henry are so complex, and the added characters of Gomez, Alba, Richard, and Kendrick are difficult to keep up with. I was surprisingly unmoved at the ending. It was beautifully done, but I found myself wanting more... or maybe less. I recommend this to people who have time to read this book from start to finish within one to two weeks. Otherwise, it's very difficult to keep up with, and the emotions are lost.
