I loved the endearing complexities of Little Bee, a beautiful character sharing her brutal story, victim of the inevitable fallout of the vicious oil wars in Nigeria. The writer paints a swath of tension and fear from page one and never puts it down. A compelling yet difficult read. Spoiler alert: There is a brutal rape scene in this book which could be a show stopper for some. Beware.

My poetry teacher in college was an apprentice of Jack Myers, and I still remember when Jack came to class and read the poem about glasses from this book. Ever-so moving in ever-so few words. This is the true art of Jack Myers, compression combined with imagery and eloquence. Highly recommended.

Growing up in Chicago, I sort of absorbed a lot of information about Frank Lloyd Wright throughout my life. I even have a coffee table book about him on my coffee table right now. But I had never heard anything about Mamah Borthwick, so this was an interesting read. I'm glad I didn't know anything about their relationship going in, because there were a few rather surprising surprises. Overall, though, I felt this read more like nonfiction than a novel. I love nonfiction, so that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it lacked a spark that I was expecting. The writing felt strangely emotionless and seemed to skip from fact to fact. Horan would frequently jump ahead in the story and then catch the reader up in flashbacks. The first few times I liked that technique, but as she returned to the same well over and over again, it distanced me from the story.

I'm just not sure what to make of this book. I definitely enjoyed it, though it took a little while to pull me in. There are 6 different stories within the novel, arranged in the structure: 1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1. The stories span a wide range of genres: historical journal, science fiction, and mystery, just to name a few. They move forward chronologically; the first story takes place in the 1840's, and the last two are in some distant future. Each story is connected to the one that follows, and they are all joined by a couple of factors. All in all, an interesting and entertaining read, but it does require some patience.
This is such a deeply touching book. You will laugh and cry. You walk with Jem, Dill and Scout during their daily lives in racist, Depression south of Macomb County. You see the Depression south through the innocent eyes of Scout. You truly get a deeper understanding of human nature while reading this book as well as the power of the human spirit. Atticus Finch shows one what it means to stand for strong principles. Atticus does the unthinkable by representing a negro and going against "his own people". Last but not least you realize the meaning of the saying it is a sin to kill a mockingbird when you meet Boo Radly and Tom Robinson. This book perfecly illustrates the beauty and the ugliness of people.
This book is not what I thought it would be. I was looking for an understanding of what it was like for African Americans post Civil War. In reading the introductory information, which is much, I learned that the author focused much of the book on the relationship of the two women, which makes the book more about sexual preference than racial issues. The thing that I object to most of all, which really cannot be helped, is that the letters are mostly ones written by the less educated of the two, which makes the reading laborious. In a case like this, with limited information, I would prefer historical fiction to actual correspondence. I put it back on the shelf. Maybe at a later time. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to reading it.
