One of the big problems I have with many long-running series—Princess Diaries in particular—is the point where some books start becoming filler as opposed to actual plot development. (Wait ‘til I get to book seven.) Technically, this should be one of the filler books, but it’s not. I tend to see the first three books as a mini-trilogy, and Princess in the Spotlight is a good bridge between books one and three. I like the further insight to Mia’s princess lessons, and how quickly she does have to adapt to the public eye, the romantic subplot is fairly engaging, not to mention the fact that she’s willing to try to be with Kenny. (Also, the continuing references to the “Corn-in-the-Chili" boy is even funnier after reading the whole series.) However, this also shows a lot of the weak points in the series. The constant pop culture references are jarring and shows how much the book is dated (again, reading an “updated” rerelease, the find & replace is really noticeable). This is also the first book where I really start to dislike Lilly as a friend—she’s exploitive of Mia, though not to the extent of Lana or Josh Richter, extremely dismissive, and is actually pretty rude to her friends. (In contrast, Tina Hakeem-Baba is my favorite character in the whole series. She is awesome, that is all.) My other big complaint, which is really going to show for the next few installments, is how fast the plot moves in the series’ timelines (again, we’ll touch on this a little later). Still, for all of the flaws, it’s still an enjoyable book, and I still had a ton of fun revisiting it.

** spoiler alert ** Sad story with sad characters. Wouldn't want to live with this crowd. There is the: holier than thou self rightous neighbor girl Kat who excuses all her illegal acts, fair weather wife and son who fold and run at the first sign of trouble, married lawyer man who dumps his wife and 3 girls so he can be noble and play "caring husband" to a divorcing sick woman who he has loved forever. You don't see Kat being concerned about that family. and the mean mouthed no help sisters. What a crew! Nobody tries to work things out. Way too many references to nature. The lillies, bees, grasses and birds got to be old. Would a drivers license that had been soaking in water for years still be legible?

It took me awhile to get into this book. It did not follow the typical arc of a story. She is such a good writer that once I got into the story I was hooked. I was still left with a lot question concerning the Mennonite lifestyle but I loved her mom and family. I thought there would be a bigger divide between me and someone raised as a Mennonite. It turned out that she was not much different from me. The strongest part of this is book is her writing style. It is very conversational and flowed easily.

This is a deeply interesting book about an under explored aspect of human action, namely the act of repair. Of special import is Spelman's attunement to the different kinds of repair, which she illustrates vividly through portraits of different repair persons. Having laid down some basic distinctions, Spelman goes on to consider the possible range and import of the concept and practice of repair in human thought and behavior. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and would recommend it to a wide audience.
