I loved this historical series when I was in elementary school. Each book was a stand alone story and featured a young woman from a noteworthy historical period. This one was my absolute favorite and took place during the California gold rush. I wish you could still buy these in stores!

The Body in Pain was revolutionary for me. In the kind of way that a weighty critical theory text should be, Scarry rocked out my ideas of consent, objectification, Western systems of coming to knowledge, and domination. Torture, though not pallatable, is oft justified as a way of obtaining information. She challenges the reader to re-think the use of pain in war and battle.

"It's about time!" your all probably saying, am I right? I know, I have raved about this book, its about time I write my review. But the thing is, I don't know if I can do it justice or not. I mean I loved this book so much, I want to get across how great it was. I'm trying to hold back my Oh-My-Squee of joy here, I promise I will try my best not to go all fan girl on you! We follow Gabi as she gets thrown back in time to the fourteenth century. The author wastes no time in getting us to the interesting parts. That's right. She ends up right in the middle of a battle with her sister Lia no where to be found. Scary right? Does she break down? Uh, no. Gabi throughout the book even when she makes a few face-palming mistakes, always stuck up for herself and was a kick-butt herione! SHE ACTUALLY HAD A BRAIN! Gosh, I know it was amazing! I was like, "Yeah, go Gabs!" Her sister Lia was quite the character too, she is pretty tough! I wouldn't have the guts to do the things she did. Even though some things are hard to believe I didn't care because I was so absorbed in the story. Now those were the girls, how about these Italian hotties? Like a fellow reviewer said, that word is plural, people! Plural!! Meaning more than one hottie in the mix! I loved these guys (except for the bad ones of course), I mean can they get any more manly? Lisa really knows how to create em, plus they are so respectful of Gabi. Marcello and Luca captured my heart. Both are so swoon worthy, its incredible! This book definitely packs some great romance in there! For romance lovers like me, this is the book for you! The plot and setting no doubt reeled me in. I am a sucker for time travel, and to Italy? Yes, please! The historical elements were expertly done and not to mention engaging. I was so wrapped up in the story I had 14th century on my brain for days! This book is mentioned as Christian fiction but to tell you the truth it had only a few lines regarding God. The descriptions were so vivid, the characters so in depth, the romance so heart pounding, and the plot so engaging, how could I not love this book? I highly recommend this book to those who love romance, time travel, suspense, adventure and much more! I cannot wait to read Cascade! Lisa Bergren you rock!

As a huge fan of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical which I have seen on Broadway twice, I was very interested in reading the book. With the novel, you get to know the real phantom - a creature; a frightening being that kills. Webber's phantom in both the play and the movie, you find yourself routing for the phantom to win the heart of the heroine Christine over his nemesis Raoul. I have fallen in love with the phantom in both the play and the movie (especially the movie as Gerard Butler is HOT)! Reading Leroux's classic novel finds you in an almost entirely different story altogether.

The Whisperer in Darkness (Kind of long for what you get. I read it before but didn't realize. Mi Go trick main character into coming to a farm in the hils. Then he finds face and hands of friend in chair.) - In the Vault (Creepy - great last line ending, similar to Statement of Randolph Carter.) - The Call of Cthulhu (Awesome writing. Great famous lines, "Only poetry or madness could describe...", "Then the Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel … and all the earth would flame with a halocaust of exstacy and freedom.") - The Colour Out of Space (Can't remember) - The Dunwich Horror (Very cool and Lovecraftian, the good guys actually win though. A bit too long, but scary and the first real description of one of the creatures.) - The Haunter of the Dark (Pretty standard Lovecraft. Like the fact that this thing lived in a really old building right in the middle of town.) - The Music of Erich Zann (Awesome. Playing keeps the monsters away and his window looks into incalculable depths.) - The Picture in the House (Would have been better but the accent was annoying.) - The Terrible Old Man (Good but too short, not scary enough) - The Thing on the Doorstep (Started out sounding contrived, and the writing wasn't as good as usual. But then it got creepy at the end. Was also pretty original.) - Cool Air (Guy's body is dead, to preserve it he keeps his room cold and soaks himself in chemical baths. He's living through force of will. Then his body starts to deteriorate.) - Pickman's Model (Cool, more easy going style than most Lovecraft. Scary and dark.) - The Outsider (Not sure when I originally read this story but I never forgot it. This is the one where the narrator has lived all his life in a closed off castle and doesn't realize he's a monster until he sees a mirror. Kind of silly though because he could have seen his arms and legs.) - The Rats in the Walls (Man rebuilds the ancient residence of his family and finds a subterranean world where humans were bred for food and his family was part of it. Creepy but hard to understand while you're reading it.)

Pretty good. Things I liked: the main character, the lessons in bold print throughout the book, and the Hollywood setting. Things I didn't like: all the women were beautiful, all the men were gorgeous, and cell phones ringing (and being answered) at the most inopportune times. It was a little long, but still entertaining enough to keep me reading. I have to say I was a little let down at the end, even though it does finish on an promising note.
