This is my favorite Gregory Maguire book so far. He also kept it short and didn't bog the tale down with too much back story, a flaw I found in his other books I've read. And I enjoyed the combination of the traditional Snow White tale with the historical Borgia family (or a fictionalized version of the Borgia family). It's a solid fairy tale redux. Not great, but not a bad read.

I did enjoy it and I liked the main characters a lot. I will continue to read the series. That being said, I can't really say I'm as crazy about the book as many people seem to be. It was good; but not a favorite.

It took me a while to get into it as for some reason I wasn't prepared for it being told from the side of the dark, even though it was called Day Watch!! But after a while it seemed to get better and better, to the point where, even after the somewhat anticlimactic ending, I felt I'd really enjoyed it, and certainly look forward to reading Twilight Watch. The second half was as good, maybe even better than Night Watch, but the first half is why it gets 3 stars instead of 4, even if it was down to me.

I liked this novel. What was satisfying for me was that at the end, the loose ends are if not tied in a bow, introduced to each other. While the lives detailed were often sad and hopeless and confused, there was some sense of order and grace at the end that was reassuring. Hoffman is an exquisite writer, and while I could have done with less of the practical magical realism here (was the ghost actually necessary?), I thought her point of learning to let go to move on was clear and well rendered.

All her books are excellent. I love the way she develops relationships in the books. The characters are full bodied and realistic. Not just cut and dried romance. You always learn something from Ms. Coopers stories.
