this author recommended for female character crime mystery. I won't be looking for other books by this author. Main character Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, seemed absurd and contrived. Too many other good books out there to waste time on this.

This is the true "sequel" to Ender's Game. Don't read Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, or Children of the Mind, expecting them to be like Ender's Game. They're not. Their main character is Ender as an adult, and he does struggle with the guilt and consequences of some of his actions in the first book, but in theme and style, they're completely different. The events of Ender's Shadow take place a the same time as Ender's Game, but they focus on Bean, rather than on Ender. Card explores many of the same themes (childhood, intelligence, heroism, social psychology, duty, leadership) but seen from a different pair of eyes.

It's just sick they make you read Steinbeck - especially the Red Pony and the Pearl - in high school. It's a wonder I wasn't totally turned off from reading on these two awful stories alone.

I thought this was cute, nothing special & I probably wouldn't Recommend it to anybody however it was way better than Bushnell's "Sex & the City" therefore it got bumped up to 3 stars.

I read this book because it was an "assignment" for my book club. I read the blurb and thought "murder, finding bones, serial killer", this is not my kind of book. But I am so glad I read it. I really enjoyed it. The story is about a modern day woman who has just moved into a new home after a nasty divorce and finds a 100 year old skeleton buried in her garden. Once the police are involved, she is contacted by a mysterious man who claims he can solve the case of who the body is and who did it. The book jumps from modern time to the early 19th century through a series of letters and paperwork kept by the previous owner, who also mysteriously died in the garden. Mystery and intrigue ensue.

A wonderful visual.
Not my favorite Christie mystery, but certainly a uniquely ingenious one.

A very entertaining depiction of a Victorian antihero. Flashman is a cowardly, womanizing scoundrel trying to survive in an era that put courage, honor, and proper behavior on a pedestal. Whereas his comrades might believe that there is nothing more noble than to die for the British Empire, Flashman is convinced that there is nothing more foolish. Of course, since even he would prefer to be treated with respect, Flashman masks his cowardly ways with hollow bravado and, through a combination of keen survival skills (i.e. running or hiding whenever the opportunity presents itself) and sheer luck, he actually manages to build a reputation as a war hero. The novel itself is admirably well researched, with ample references to obscure historical events, as befitting a novel purported to be the man's actual memoirs. Apparently others carry this further, going so far as to contain numerous footnotes in an effort to portray the novel as scandalous real history rather than a work of fiction. Also of note is this novel's connection to the actual 19th century memoir "Tom Brown's School Days", which was the original source for the character of Flashman, who was the prototypical example of the craven schoolyard bully. Flashman, as narrator, is quite candid about this connection and even goes so far as to provide the "real story" behind events in that book. All this being said, I felt that this book showed poor promise than actual brilliance of its own. I firmly believe that later ones will prove to be much more polished.
