I started this book February 26th. I finished it February 27th. It's almost 500 pages long. Yes, it's a YA book, but the print is normal sized, not huge, the words aren't tiny, it's not an "easy reader" in any sense of the word but in how hard I found to put it down. The essential plot is that the heroine, Isabella (or Bella) moves to a little town called Forks where it is perpetually rainy. Being that this town is set in the northwestern peninsula of Washington state, this is believable. She's 17, a junior in high school, and starts school as an outsider. No as much an outsider as the Cullens, though, the preternaturally beautiful quintet who sit by themselves at lunch, never eating, one of which is her lab partner. Edward rather hates her at first, a state that Bella finds totally shocking, but he has his reasons. He's a vampire, and she's his perfect meal, as well as the only person he's ever met whose mind he can't read. However, he's a vampire that only drinks the blood of animals, and the temptation she poses is nearly irresistible. The fact that they fall in love and start dating only makes it worse. Imagine dating someone made out of the world's most scrumptious chocolate. Maybe this book is so amazing to me because Edward is totally the guy I always wanted to date in high school: smart, unbelievably gorgeous, sweet, polite. But the characterization of Bella and Edward, not to mention the rest of Edward's vampiric family and Bella's human one, is truly amazing. Yeah, it's a YA book. But we should all read something young once in a while.

So glad I read this after I had children...not before. I loved the complexity of the mother/daughter relationship...the mystery of what did happen in the birthing room that night...and the politics/medical ethics/malpractice issues of midwifery vs. MDs and hospitals in rural Vermont.

I would recommend this book to everyone. The english author has a great dry wit. The dialogue was also excellent. I never knew much about the occupation of the Guernsey island in the English channel in World War two. Some of the subject matter was intense with respect to the occupation of the island but there was also a lot of humor in the writing as well. The book is told in letters from several people in the book group on the islands to the author following the war. This format makes it a very quick read. I finished it in a day and stayed up late reading it because I just had to find out the end! The book was nothing like I had expected but that was part of the fun.

Brooklyn at the turn of the century. In Russia Jews have felshers; healers who are not doctors, but are allowed to make and administer drugs there. Uncle Herschel is a felsher, but when he comes to America, he can't practice medicine without a license. How will he make a living without breaking the law? Ice boxes, horse carts and great Yiddishisms abound in this charming tale told through the eyes of Herschel's ten-year-old nephew, Yankel.

Let’s talk about love triangles for a moment: I am really not a fan of them. If they’re handled well, then fine, I can stomach them. However, the trend in a lot of romances and young adult (especially in recent years) is to shove two guys into the reader’s face, with a clear favorite and use that as ~drama~. And that I cannot stand. Which brings us to Darkest Hour. While the first two books did have a slight love triangle subplot (in the form of guy crushes on Suze, ends up being driven away due to her position as a mediator; book 3 had a different situation), this book sets up the main arc for the second half of the series with Paul. Again, the biggest problem I have in this is that Carmel always turns out to be Mediator City, USA when we learn that Jack (and later, his brother) are both mediators. (Again, how did Suze not know about anyone else in Manhattan who had the same powers? I can understand her not wanting to talk about it, but still, I find it very doubtful.) The one thing I enjoyed about this is Jesse’s backstory, and how we learn more about his short life. I liked that he gets some sense of closure, even if he doesn’t end up leaving the mortal realm. However, Paul is a really undeveloped character, and using him as an antagonist in this does come out of left field. It feels more like a filler book than the previous two entries, even though a lot of plot points are set up in here.

Not many books really nail the ending for me. This book really, really nailed it. I just sat here looking at the last line, thinking, "Damn." So good. The whole book is very well written and, even though, as a mother, some parts were very hard to read, it was a great book.

I loved this book. A man in his nineties tells the tale of his life in the circus during the depression. It's an exciting and fast paced read. I finished it in a day because I just couldn't put it down.

“I guess sometimes the search for freedom is enough to keep one alive.” Melitta and her family’s experience in Nazi Germany in WWII was something that no one wants to contemplate, but it happened and she has written a short, but stirring memoir about it. When Melitta was born she was taken from her mother in the hospital in order to perform experiments on her. However, miraculously, she was returned to her family 6 months later with no side effects resulting from the time away. Her story covers the frightening journey her family took for freedom and how they finally found peace. Melitta eventually moved to the United States along with some of her siblings and was asked if she would give any comments to Americans regarding freedom. She said: “I have come to deeply love this country and what it stands for, but much has changed and is changing. We must be vigilant against those who wittingly and unwittingly destroy our freedom. Bad politicians can do that.” Something to think about. There is a lot of impact squeezed into this short book and I recommend it to people of all ages. Thank you to Melitta Strandberg and Bostick Communications for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

** spoiler alert ** This book is engaging and I would recommend it to other people to read. But the story went on too long; the author kept adding new elements to the story every time I felt like it should be wrapping up. And she kept moving the search for Mr. Harvey toward a climax, then dropped it altogether and ended it in a very anticlimatic way. So it was a great book, but not as satisfying as it could have been. I also found the sex scene with Susie a little indulgent... like living out a fantasy of being able to interact with people who are gone. Up until that scene, the author did a good job of not doing that. On the other hand, she didn't simplify the grief of the family, and I think she did very well with portraying that.
