This woman shows amazing strength to survive her experiences growing up. First she begins her life in an abusive home and then endures the horrible abuse inflicted upon her as the Nazis took over her town. I learned the "Dutch" temper is a true cultural emotion.

I thought the pacing of the novel was uneven. The first section read really quickly. Then, time jumps ahead and we look back on the results of the rape, baby in tow, soon to be dead. Then it drags. In fact D'Urbervilles visits Tess a total of seven times to convince her of the same thing. Many hundreds of pages of handwringing later, the story resolves itself. I understand tragedy. But, I don't understand jumping from a quick moving to a slow moving story. The most interesting parts of the story, the beginning and ending, are almost glossed over. Anyway, I know there is much scholarship that waxes poetic over Hardy. He really was a gifted writer. The descriptions of nature are poetic and far from superfluous. (they tend to foreshadow, a lot). My issue is the pacing. Also, this is not a book for people who want happy endings. Hardy wrote to politicize, to illustrate the unfairness of society. Such stories do not have unicorns and rainbows.

Surprisingly witty tale of a vacuum salesman in Cuba. Entertaining.

Wow, awesome book! One of the best mysteries I have read in a while and wanted to sit and read til I was done. It catches you attention right from the beginning, has twists and turns and a surprise ending. One of those books you never figure out. If you like mysteries, then you will love this! And it was free on the Kindle when I picked it up, which makes it even better!

Such an amazing, thrilling story. Only goes to remind how much of a plump useless softie one would be in such a end-of-the-world society. Might I say it has motivated me to go & learn a useful trade of the hands?

One of the ultimate reads regarding feminine tragic irony - Tess' fate truly is as blighted as the stars in the English countryside's sky. Thomas Hardy at his best!

I was very hesitant about reading Christian "fiction." But Francine Rivers was recommended to me and I am so glad. Would certainly with any read be careful to not confuse facts with fiction. Leota's Garden, however, does not go into historical fiction. This book is great for the contemporary. Francine Rivers conveys well today's struggle of the new and maturing believer. Having to leave friends and family for Christ. The sinful tendency and bondage of manipulation we do to one another to get what we want from those who we "love." Francine Rivers exhibits insight on the fallen human condition in at least a couple "roles," as a parent and as a college student. And she conveys oh so well, the joy of being a believer, the hope we have and are assured, and the fact that having Christ is indeed, the one pearl of great worth.

Two weeks have passed since the events of the prior book and Kaylee is still struggling with whether or not she can trust Nash again since he'd lied to her and used his bean sidhe ability to Influence her mind while he was addicted to Demon's Breath. Her heart and head are warring with each other over the issue. But along comes Sabine, the troubled (and trouble) girlfriend Nash left behind a couple of years ago when his mother moved them to a different town and Nash hadn't been able to contact her. She's made it clear that Nash is hers and she intends to fight dirty to get Kaylee out of the way. Sabine's arrival coincides with trouble at the school involving deaths and utter chaos, and Avari, a hellion, has new plans to get his hands on Kaylee. The weight on her shoulders gets heavier as Kaylee and crew attempt to save the school from the machinations of the Netherworld. This is the 4th book in the Soul Screamers series. As an adult reading this YA series, I find the struggle Kaylee faces between her heart and head to be somewhat grown up and the trust issue is appropriate for the amount of time that's taken place. Some might find it a little frustrating that she hasn't immediately moved on in either direction, although the pace works for the story. Sabine's character is interesting. Situations and conversations with or due to her provide the reader with insight to relationships beyond our own wants. What's actually best for whom in the long run? Even though it's told in first person, the author has done a good job of getting the thoughts and perspectives of the other major players to come through in the story. I found it easy to read and not too dark considering the circumstances. And it would be difficult not to be sucked in from the first paragraph. If you have a Kindle and have not yet gotten it, Reaper, the short story told from Tod's point of view, telling us how he died and became a reaper, would be good to read before this one, especially since the story is still free to download. It's not necessary to read it first, but the events take place when Nash is obsessed with Sabine.
