I received this book as a gift and knew absolutely nothing about it. At first I thought it would be a book about perfume with a quirky but nonetheless boring story more suited for a female reader. How wrong could I have been? This is an excellent book. Perfume is the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with an unbelievably powerful sense of smell, but yet no odour himself, we follow him through childhood to his teenage years in Paris where he helps an aging perfumer, Baldini, develop some of the most pleasing and successful perfumes in Paris. Grenouille’s own self-loathing and resentment towards society build from this point on and Suskind leads us into a situation where Grenouille’s over-riding obsession with finding the perfect scent leads him to commit some of the most calculated and disturbed of murders thinkable. There is so much dialogue and there are so many passages devoted to the intense description of smells and particular scents that the novel ought to be hard work. However, I found myself flying through the pages largely due to the quality of the writing and because the story itself is so compelling. Suskind’s style is one of the joys of this book- the whole world of enlightenment France is constructed on smell throughout- when reading of Grenouille’s infancy in the fish markets I had to try not to breath in, and when he confidently strides around Baldini’s workshop preparing his concoctions, my nostrils were widened in anticipation and excitement. Suskind’s characters are extremely well-defined and believable, which considering the plot is an achievement in itself. Grenouille is so bizarre and disturbed a character that on the face of it we should not be drawn to him. But inevitably we are. It is Suskind’s talent as a writer that forces the reader to like this evil, manipulative and inherently unlikeable character. And to keep the reader captivated at all times, the story of Perfume is one of the most fascinating, original and exciting I had come across in a while. On an aside, I went to see the movie of Perfume with the usual skepticism after one has read the book, but I was pleasantly surprised. The movie invested much in images and description, like the book, and the darkness that Suskind’s words had created in my mind was replicated on screen. I was also impressed with Ben Wishaw as Grenouille and the big guns of Dustin Hoffman as Baldini and Alan Rickman as Richis were excellent. All in all, a highly enjoyable, captivating and original read.
