I balked and hesitated about reading this. I walked around it, poked it a bit, after my copy arrived, scoffing at all I had read about it. I knew if I didn't read it now, it would sit on my shoulder and I would continue to scoff and doubt. I am scoffing no more. I am instead taken aback by how amazing this book is. How Towles evokes the time and feel of Modernist writers (in undergrad and grad years this was my main time period that I loved and was most drawn too) and in a strange way adds to the Canon of Literature from that time. Well used allusions and references to Fitzgerald, James, Hemingway, Wharton, and Melville (I argue that he was a Modernist writer prior to the definition and time, but an argument for another place) are found in the text. Some are subtle, some are upfront. It's a book rich in the literary, love this when it's done well, and it's done well here. There are a few places where the text slips and I felt reminded it is a book written recently. When these instances occur they do not linger and I'm again drawn back in to that time. A dynamic book that is: strongly written, intelligent, thought provoking, challenging, and rich complex characters. It's a 4 1/2 star book, but easy to round up to Five on.

Maryrose Wood continues the tale of how Miss Penelope Lumley is turning Alexander, Beowulf, and Cassiopeia into acceptable and mannerly children. The Incorrigibles are still learning the ins and outs of society. Unfortunately...or fortunately?...the children learn their lessons while visiting the bustling city of London. The city life presents new challenges including a run-in with palace guards and an abundance of pigeons. Listeners are in for a treat! Katherine Kellgren returns to read the second Incorrigible Children of Ashton place. I was on the edge of my seat to checkout this story. I love the Incorrigibles and their adventures. Kellgren shares these books with finesse. I look forward to listening to The Hidden Gallery again soon. The next book, The Unseen Guest, is coming out this year. I cannot wait!

Very interesting story ! A true account of the WWII plane crash in a remote mountainous region of New Guinea . Reminiscent of Lost Horizons ! This is the story of the 3 survivors ( out of 24 passengers), their ordeal, and subsequent rescue almost 8 weeks later. Interesting interactions with the native peoples who were really still living in the stone age-having virtually zero contact with anyone or anything outside of their very remote mountainous villages. An interesting historical account of this event.

nteresting in regards to the theory of deception; appears to have put much time and effort into his research. The ideas regarding the 20th century events are conceivable. However, the theory of Hebrew history is ridiculous. Overall, the book has a feel of a glamorized tabloid. It is interesting to note that there is no author biography, nor comments or praise from anyone, scholarly or not, anywhere in the book. Has the feel of something dropped from the sky and promptly returned via black hole.

We were assigned this book in second grade. Apparently some schools have trouble getting it out there now based on the whole "Rhold Dahl was a raging anti-semetic bastard" issue. I don't see how that weighs on a great children's book, but no matter. What I remember most was being greatly disturbed by the marriage of the Ladybug to a fireman at the books conclusion. She's a bug. He's a person. How can they be married.... or reproduce? Clearly, she has babies on the brain, as the safety of her unborn kin was a big part of her seeking out a fireman for a mate. Ew. Cross-species mingling! Creepy to even a seven year old.

The third in Burdett's Bangkok series is just as interesting as the first two. See my review of the first two in my blog

Sebastian is bored at the ball and looking for some illicit excitement he’s heard about that takes place behind the scenes. However there is no card game, he quickly finds himself swept up in sex with a stranger. It’s difficult to say if Sebastian has ever considered an attraction to men, however he takes to this first experience with gusto and is quite happy to go along with it. Afterward he’s slightly freaked out and by chance runs into his temporary lover who appears to know who he is. The entire story takes place over a couple of hours, from Sebastian’s interlude with the stranger to a further interlude in the carriage after he leaves the ball. You don’t know much about Sebastian except that he finds the whole ball and the games people play there a bit of a bore. You know even less about Adam, the stranger, except that he has more experience than Sebastian. I did find the “coincidence” of how they met outside the ball a bit mystifying, but I suppose it’s one of those plot devices to give the two men further opportunity for a dalliance. The descriptions of the ball and the machinations of a young lady who uses the anonymity of a masked ball to push the limits was well described, and the irony was not lost on Sebastian who intends the same. When you are in the mood for an erotic piece set in another time with solid writing it’s a fast rewarding read. The sex is hot between the two men and seeing Sebastian go from a bit stunned about what’s happening to an eager participant is enjoyable.
