It's a very slow-moving book, and the plot takes a long time to establish itself and develop, but the writing style and the characters are so engaging that I couldn't put it down once I started in on it. It's a story about magic in England in the 1800s, at a point when magic had ceased being something people did and instead was an academic subject that people studied. Amidst all these "theoretical magicians," a practical magician named Mr. Norrell emerges on the scene and does some snazzy magic that, as a result of a bet, forces all the theoretical magicians in England to cease calling themselves magicians. Mr. Norrell slowly becomes famed throughout England and eventually takes on a student, Jonathan Strange, who has received a prophecy that he and Mr. Norrell will be rivals. They work together for a long time, but eventually the prophecy fulfills itself and the two become the leaders of rival factions of English magic. Somehow this all sounds a lot more dull than it really is when I write it all out. I found the book absolutely wonderful and was completely wrapped up in it. Highly recommended!

Boring story of a rise from poverty and nothingness to power and influence, and back again.

I picked this book out from the library through a suggestion from amazon. I had typed in 'Sandman Slim' and came up with this book for my husband to read. He said it was entertaining, but not as good as 'Sandman Slim'. Well, I was in a lull between trips to the library so I read it. It took me longer than usual because the first half of the book wasn't anything exciting. I had enough interest to keep reading, though. Halfway through, the storyline picked up. 3/4 of the way I was devouring the book. It was quite the mystery to me. I was getting frustrated actually with my own reading speed because I wanted to find out what had happened. I was also frustrated because I'm sure that my husband or my brother-in-law probably would have figured out the whole thing by now. I'm not that clever. I'm intelligent, but not clever. It's the same reason I can't think of good comebacks until a few minutes later. It's also probably why humorous sarcasm doesn't register well with my brain. Insert dumb blonde jokes here. Anywho. The ending of the book makes it possible to have several more books about Castor's adventures, but it wasn't an unsatisfying ending. Meaning, you won't throw the book across the room because it leaves you hanging. I believe this is the author's first novel so more stories following the protagonist could only get better.

This is easily one of the worst books I've ever read. The other three were a decent light read, but it was clear that no editing was involved in this. That and the creepiness with Jacob and Renessme were too much.

Are you trying to kill me? Now I need to go find a full-length biography of Joan Baez. *sigh*

What an excellent & satisfying read. "The Great Silence" examines the transformation of life (primarily in Britain) in the two years after the first world war...and does so using chapters labelled after stages of grief and other human emotional states. It follows a large cross-section of society, and never loses its focus on the transformative power of traumatic on the people within this society. It's effective as a secondary history resource AND effective as an epic story worthy of film.
