Interesting book. Makes you think about the decisions you make as a consumer.

Five stars of love, this is the book that started me on my love of all things apocalyptic. This will always be a favorite.

I would have given this a higher ranking, but I thought the ending was utter crap.

Excellent inspiring book about how the pain of some countries gives birth to entrepreneurs who seize opportunities (not always the most glamorous ones), sometimes eschew venture capital (they don't always need it) and build empires that educate, entertain, and help lift people out of poverty. This isn't a "I work for a non-profit, aren't I great" book, but rather, one that shows how enterprises that help improve the quality of life in emerging countries can also be good business.

I like the funny writing style, but this book is little more than a rant against meat eaters. The goal of the authors is to convince readers to become vegan, and most of the chapters are dedicated to that purpose. That was not at all what I read this book for, and I was very disappointed.

Conventional Wisdom? You thought it was a good thing right? Wrong. The man who coined this term regarded it rather as a 'convenient, comfortable, and comforting, but NOT necessarily true'. Rather invented by a consensus of journalistically inclined 'experts'. Ever given a thought that the drop in crime in the 90s was caused by Row vs. Wade & legalized abortion? Or that real estate agents act much like the in the KKK? Freakonomics is a definite interesting read. For anyone with a open mind and an interest to hear theories about the cause and effect of some very prevalent topics in modern day life from a perspective that you would likely not hear anywhere else. The book poses some interesting questions; it is of course all theory, but then again, what isn't? The last few chapters drawl on just a bit, but overall a very good read.

read it I finally did, and in one sitting. I have to say, though, that this is one of the sadder animals books I've read. Yes, of course, it is about the Black Beauty Ranch which does truly amazingly wonderful things for animals and which I am very, very grateful is in existance. And yes, there are happy endings to a lot of the animal stories presented, but Amory also gives the horrible beginnings to these stories (and to some that don't end as well). I found myself alterating between very upset and very angry at the way animals have been treated in the past. (I suppose it doesn't help that I so recently read a book all about the mistreatment to and injustices done to animals.) I know from other sanctuary books that it is possible to make them much more uplifting, and I suppose I was hoping for that here as well. Nonetheless, a good read if only to make me more familiar with the Ranch. It's too bad they aren't open to the public as much as they used to be - in 2005 they shut down public access except for special occassions. This book did make me want to go and check the place out, especially the burros! I'll have to see when their next event is.

This is my favorite book. Elizabeth Berg has a way of writing things that I have thought to myself. It lets you really connect with the book and characters. This book is a great story that focuses on female friendship. Great, great, great book!

When I was a kid, there was a television show with a very cute Kurt Russell playing a kid who traveled around all over the west. It was a Western, but not a traditional one. The title of the show was The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters. Little did I know the idea for the show came from a novel, and a Pulitzer winner at that! Jaimie goes with his father, Dr. Sardius McPheeters, heading west lured by the dreams of striking it rich in the gold fields of California. Leaving Louisville, Kentucky suddenly to escape creditors, Dr. McPheeters takes his son Jaimie on a trip chasing his dreams. It is a hearty tale filled with larger than life characters and unbelievable adventures with last moment saves from utter destruction -- the fare of any western. But what sets this apart is a wonderful tongue-in-cheek humor that comes up at the most unlikely times giving a readability to a book which, otherwise, would be a true eye-roller and soon put away as not worth reading.
