We read this in two days during snack time. I wasn't sure how it'd go over in the boy crowd, but when I stopped halfway through yesterday I heard groans. "No, keep reading....we want to know what happens!" The story is short and simple and not too mushy (there is a bit of romance). You could use it for a math lesson or just for fun. We enjoyed the story. The illustrations were also nicely done. It could possibly work as a beginning chapter book, but there are some Chinese names they would need help with as well as words like Imperial. The large numbers are written out (6 million 5 hundred thousand....) but newer readers may not be familiar with those terms either.

I enjoyed reading this book, but not so much because it is a great novel but more because the ideas behind it are nice and out of respect for the author, who has written great non-fiction and done great work.

I listened to this on CD and that was a big mistake! The author reads it and I've never heard a book read more dramatically. Drove me nuts.

Accomplished MMA fighter and award-winning writer Cameron Conaway presents in Caged the true story of a young man who overcomes a family background and his own inner torment by learning to channel his frustrations into the physical world of mixed martial arts fighting and the cerebral world of poetry and writing. It teaches the value of personal reflection, how life’s most painful moments can lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of human nature, and just what is possible when optimism and determination combine to overcome tough odds. An Amazing preface to an even more amazing book! Cameron Conaway has written far more than a memoir- Caged: Memoirs of a Cage-Fighting Poet is a book that will stay with you long after you turn the final page- it is that affecting and well done. One would not normally relate Cage fighting and Poetry- but in the sensitive and very talented hands of Cameron Conaway- the connection is seamless- this is a very special book. The trials and tribulations Cameron Conaway endures are not documented as a typical "tell-all"- rather the words are filled with TRUE feeling and honesty- rare in so many memoirs. It is obvious that so much thought and feeling went into each aspect of this unforgetable book, and it is indeed a cold hearted person who will not be deeply affected by this honest, superbly written and YES! poetic story of a brave and intelligent man dealing with life on life's terms. Would this book have crushed me had I not read it in a solitary marathon curled on the floor of my apartment in Tucson? Yes.

I would give it 3.5 stars if I could... I found this book really enjoyable. Interesting, quirky characters. Funny. Whimsical. Touching. But sometimes, sometimes, the author seemed to be trying a little too hard, and that put me off a little bit.

Anyone who loves the movie will love this book. Get a version that has the first few chapters of the "lost" sequel, "Buttercup's Baby." If you didn't know, S. Morgenstein is made up. I am sorry if that rocks your world (as it did mine when I was like 15). But the book has a similar feel than the movie - the author will interrupt himself occasionally to say things to the reader, as the grandfather does on the movie. I think it is a really funny book.

Let me start off by saying that books involving dragons are not normally my thing. I don't have anything against dragons, per se, I just find dragon books to be wholly overwritten most of the time. I'll make George R.R. Martin's books the notable exception. And I'll add this one to that list as well. It took me a while to understand the style she was going for. I thought the language was a little stilted, and then a realized that she was writing an English book of manners, a la something by the Brontes. At that point, I decided that I quite liked it. The rider character is a well-built one, but it's the dragon that steals the show. He's an incredibly compelling character with his own set of values that sometimes conflict with the rigid social structure in which he find himself. Highly recommended.

This mom was over the top. I felt like even though she was making fun of herself, she was really saying how great she was.
