My Review: Just this side of `Desperate Housewives’ crazy when it comes to realism, this book hits the mark. If you’ve been to a girl’s boarding school then everything coming out of this author’s head would seem plausible and certainly familiar. The screw driver to release the window’s safety catch, exeat weekends, terrible school food and pupils with stories more horrifying than most people would initially realise etc. The wonder then, perhaps, is that you’d bother to read on; however Sara Lawrence has written a funny, engaging book, with a strong heroine. ‘Jin’ is observant, intriguing and will make you want to stand up and cheer occasionally, despite the books’ third person narration. It’s all just so very personable. I’ll be checking out the sequel ‘Jinxed’ just as soon as I can (apparently Jinx gets a man in that one). :-)

This book looks dull I know, but it was incredible. I read this well before I started my graduate classes, but I remember feeling like this book was my own personal amazing professor teaching me everything about the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA. Very important information for all of us in this country. Although much is broken with the system, the author has done a lot of work correcting it and has lots of useful suggestions.

Yvonne Vera is a most astounding and beautiful author. More should read her work. She had a true grasp of what it meant to be African and a woman in a world rife with colonialism and violence. Where we so often look to Achebe to teach us about Africa, we should equally look to Vera. She has a lot to teach through her stories.

Sarah Stein is clearly a crusty, pushy flinty kind of New England woman, who, even in a book written by herself, comes off sounding like someone you might want to talk to (especially if you had a question about native plants), but not live next door to. Still -- her tale of conversion from fancy rose-show horticulture to an obsessive love of native ecology is fascinating (earlier chronicled in the prequel to this book, _Noah's Garden_), and this book is a charming mix of narrative and concrete directions for how to go native in your own backyard.

This book was.... okay. I found the characters and plot entertaining, but a bit too contrived. Carl Hiaason is an amazing satirist, so if your looking for a good laugh and a light read this book will be right up your ally.
