Adventure. Suspense. A sunken mystery submarine from World War II. And it's a true story with insights into a hobby you never new existed -- deep Atlantic diving. Awesome!

I read this long before it was a movie. Actually, I don't think I have seen the movie. The story touches me in a different way each time I read it. One element of the story that always stands out is the love that the old doctor had for Homer, and his inability to show it. "Good night my Princes of Maine."

I would still recommend the earlier books to anyone who enjoys YA, but this book was bad. There were moments of Smith's old style that tempt me to rate it a bit higher, but I can't do it - not even for the sake of the enjoyment that many of her other books have brought me over the years. Stefan and Elena spend a million pages being lovey (and boring) at each other. Matt, Caroline, and even Damon seem to lose the character development they'd experienced after Elena's first transformation. All three are back to being obsessed with Elena, and one randomly becomes nastier than they ever were before. Even the other characters often act wildly inconsistent with their previous selves. The timeless style of the first four books is lost as Smith awkwardly forces technology into the story to update the setting. The books are blatantly more adult, but in a way that comes across as cheap and trashy rather than mature. A new threat reveals itself after apparently having been in Fell's Church for some time. These villains don't fit the style of the earlier books in any way and seem heavily influenced by more recent urban fantasy and entertainment trends. The same is true of the style of magic that's used in this sequel. Elena regresses to a childlike state for some incomprehensible reason, and then she gains powers (that she intuitively knows how to use) at a disgusting rate. Seriously, any time the characters get into too much trouble, Elena just sprouts some new and exciting power to take care of it. Having one character that's badass enough to just fix everything completely ruins the sense of teamwork that was previously established. Between the arbitrary powers and the fox spirits and the wings and the dreamlike traps and the inappropriate trashiness, this book feels like a novelization of a bad anime show. I can't remember when I've been so disappointed.
The intimate moments are so well written.. Who doesn't like a little vampire smut?!

Not to buy any more Mark Haddon books because they were written by Mark Haddon. Just kidding, it was a cute book.. albeit a bit juvenile.
