And this book....not a strong ending to what started out as a pretty cool trilogy. Katniss became totally lame - to the point that she was even present for what it seemed the book was leading up to. And the action was so frenzied, at times, I had no idea what was going on. Felt like this one was really being written for the eventual screen play. Oh well - my advice would be to read the first book and stop there. Then again, my husband reminds me that this is a book for 12 year olds so maybe I should not have such high standards...

Lola is the quintessential Jewish mother, married to Mort. When Mort dies on a boat, Lola unravels. (This hasn't been the first time for Lola.) This dark tale of family loyalty is poignant and hilarious. She recovers from from so many near misses, it will send your head spinning with all her "Lolaisms".

This was a very enjoyable and easy read after my recent rather heavy tragic-Southern-short-story-and-WWII run of books. I give three rather than four stars because, unlike the Moonstone or Woman in White, this Collins novel lacks complexity and depth. There was also a bit too much of a boring husband quieting and reining in his impulsive lively wife.

Paul Johnson is definitely Old School. He takes the kind of Eurocentric position in praising his chosen list of the greatest creative geniuses of all time (n.b. Jane Austen is the only woman to make the list and all are European or American) that academics of the current generation chomp at the bit to pick apart and ridicule. That said, it was nice reading little snippets about such diverse "creators," from Chaucer to Walt Disney.

Time for another tear jerker to read in class! (maybe after state testing)

This one has been taunting me ever since I rented the movie and watched it with my daughter. The book, while wholly different to the movie (what with its different characters and alteration of side-plots), was equally as enjoyable. Enough for me to knock it off in a few hours, all the while convincing myself that I would read “just one more chapter”, after all, I kind of knew the ending. 270 pages later, and I’m putting a fully-read story back on the shelf. I’d recommend this to anyone who’d like a quick, refreshing trip down a path with a lovely-written story about a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread. A book I truly could not put down and can't wait to share with my daughter.

Bell’s Star, or Star as the family he works for calls him, is born in the spring of 1850 on a Vermont farm where a mother and father live with their young daughter, Katie. From the start, young Katie loves Star, and has a strong bond with the horse. Star likes Katie and her family, but he hates work and wishes he could just run free, a longing that Katie often shares as she must do many chores around the farm to help her family. Three years pass, and it is now the spring of 1853. The Fugitive Slave Law recently became law, and now it is a crime to help runaway slaves escape to freedom in nearby Canada. When Katie is riding Star in the woods, she finds Eliza, a young slave girl who is trying to escape to Canada where she hopes to find the family she was recently separated from. Katie decides she must help Eliza find her mother again, and she needs Star’s help to do so. She must keep this a secret not only from slave catchers but her own family, who would not want her involved because it is dangerous to help a runaway slave. Bell’s Star is a very sweet and simple read that is sure to be enjoyed by the target audience of young readers, particularly girls, who enjoy horse stories or historical fiction. The story is fast-paced and teaches history painlessly, and I love the illustrations, they are completely adorable. If you know a young reader who loves history or horses this would be a great book to recommend or to give as a gift.

** spoiler alert ** 3 1/2 stars. I'm not sure if the narration is entirely believable coming from a 5-year-old, but it's such a beautifully inventive voice that I didn't mind. The air really went out of the balloon for me once they escaped, though--I didn't find the second half nearly as compelling, although I liked the grandparents as characters. (Yes--I do feel guilty wishing that Jack and Ma had stayed in Room for longer!)

Was a bunch of stories he had written for magazines, such as Gourmet. At the end, he looks back at what he wrote and critiques it. Wish that critique was at the end of each story instead of the end. All in all, not a bad read.
