I was say this and Clockers are my favorite books I've read int the last five years. OK, I just made that up. But Rachel Cusk is an excellent excellent stylist and The Temporary is the book of hers I identified with the most. About the banality of being ordinary (this a theme of today see review of My Antonia). Pathetic people trying to make a connection. It's really very lovely. I should go home and reread it right now. This is my favorite Rachel Cusk and she is a great writer. Sarah should read this! Why isn't Sarah on goodreads? Or is she?

read this for class in JHS, HS, and college. I plan to read Fitzgerald's other books. *************************** Decided to take up this book again, after all these years! So far I'm about 20% through...and what's interesting is that I forgot so many of the details. It's like a refreshing experience to re-read this. Now that I am older, I do pick up on why this is considered probably one of the best American literary novels. The writing techniques, format and overall plot is very structured, especially comparing to Fitzgerald's other novels, "This Side of Paradise" or even "The Beautiful and the Damned". Will keep on reading! ******************** Half-way through and I am LOVING this book! ******************* Ok, this is the year 2012 review...again, I read this book in the 90s several times. This time around - I cannot believe some of the details and the plot. I only remember the overall themes. So it is always good to have a refresher. Seems like the point-of-view from a different character is important in detailing the whole Gatsby story. Not only is it a perspective from a person looking from out to in, but it continues on the story even after the main character can no longer supply a plot. So this is a great technique in narration as it is probably in all stories but I personally find this novel to be effectively structured in that sense. It provides a very powerful voice for the Gatsby character in a way that you will see a transformation in the narrator's original judgement/stereotype.

“City of Bones” is the debut book of Cassandra Clare. In this fast paced whirlwind of a tale we met young Clary, a down to earth red head who goes on an adventure of her life. After witnessing a strange death at a local nightclub she is dragged into the mess that becomes her life. Problem is, she can’t do anything about the death because she’s the only one who can see the murders. After some close calls to her own life, Clary comes to know some secrets of her own. Her mom is missing, the killers are in fact Shadow hunters, they kill demons and Clary…well, Clary has to get some answers now. Clary has her own talents and skills, unbeknownst to her. She emerges from the shadows of ordinary Mundie life and learns about her true self. More importantly, she learns about her family and the secrets that lie beneath. City of Bones is a thrilling ride that has you sitting, waiting, and wishing. You are rooting for the characters as the battle an evil that hits close to home, so dangerous that you would rethink your family’s dynamics. The characters are full of life, and although we might have a few things figured out before them they are still a joy to read about. A story full of secrets and hidden agendas is bound to hold you, captivating your imagination. Not to mention the complex and utterly fantastical world Cassandra Clare has created. I find it completely fascinating and just couldn’t get enough!!!

Absolutely wonderful book with tear jerking moments. The main two characters go through a lot and the "messages" are so unbelievably touching.

I did it! I finished this book before the end of the year, albeit with only a few days to spare. I did have to put it down for a long time as I was buried in schoolwork and during that time a coworker borrowed it to start his way through it. When he needed a break from it, I borrowed it back and finished it up, so now it's back in his hands. He'll probably finish it next month some time so this book has been well read in the past six months I've had it. I LOVED it. I was utterly fascinated throughout the whole thing. Though a lot of the the chapters are similiar (people were suffering, we didn't know why, so we went and found this horrible disease and didn't know what to do, etc.) I never tired of it. I thought the science was incredibly interesting and well presented -- the author doesn't write "down" to the audience, making you feel patronized, but she doen't throw around a lot of heavy science either. A very accessible, easily read writing style, in other words. The scientists in this book certainly have my respect -- I don't know that I could do their job. Scary stuff! Though the book is a few years old, it certainly isn't out of date. I would love to read an updated version, though, one that would include SARS and Avian Flu, for example.

By Far the best C.S. Lewis book ever written. I tell everyone I know to read this book. This book, more than any others, shows the human struggle and complexity belief in an unseen God provides. I love the way Lewis weaves together the small signs given throughout the story to provide just enough room to doubt. Unlike his other books, Till We Have Faces is not obvious and the reader finds themselves evaluating their own inner voices when things turn out to not be what they seem.

In "A Miracle for St. Cecilia's," you won't find one main character who seems to tell the story. Much to Father James and his church-goers' chagrin, St. Cecilia's isn't bringing in enough funds to keep it going and is scheduled to be shut down. The church is in great disrepair with leaky roofs and a heating system that regularly needs fixing. Father James has much concern for his parishioners' needs, both spiritual and otherwise. He was directed to find a nursing home for long-time Father Keene, something that Father James doesn't wish to do. He thinks Father Keene would appreciate being with friends instead of strangers during his latter years. The elderly from the church meet regularly after weekday mass at the local diner, The Country Kettle, where Lori is a waitress. She is now the main breadwinner in her family since her husband Bob has taken ill. He needs a bone marrow transplant but first a match needs to be found. An elderly priest is missing during a blizzard. St. Cecilia's is used for a base camp for the search party. George the repairman happens to show up at mealtimes, auspicious occurrences for him. Peter grieves over the loss of someone and takes it out on God. Because of this, he gives his mother the ultimatum - she was to choose either God or him. Is that the Blessed Mary folks are seeing in St. Cecilia's? Crowds come out to see, wanting Father James' attention.

This book was far better, in my opinion, than the first of the vampire chronicles. Lestat's journey was a very interesting one and it really gives a good foundation to the remainder of her vampire books that involve him. I feel like this should have been the first book however because of how little a role Louis plays in the future books. When I first read this book I was about 13 years old and it was a bit difficult for me to follow at times. Now that I am older it's even better to me and can fly through it.
