When I started the book I breezed right through it and actually enjoyed it. One third into the book things felt strangely similar and when Derek's sister Georgia is mentioned for the first time I knew what it reminded me of: Pride and Prejudice. That's when I read that Epic Fail is actually a retelling of Price and Prejudice. I was facepalming almost all the way through the rest of the book. I couldn't really enjoy the rest of it anymore, because the book followed P&P step by step. There were barely any changes made to the story and it was instead turned into a juvenile love story involving celebrities. But oh, she only has three sister instead of four and her mother is the principal instead of a stay-at-home mum. AREN'T THOSE HUGE CHANGES? Bleh. The most ridiculous thing were the names. The author didn't even bother to come up with her own names but simply changed the names a bit. A few examples: Elizabeth Bennett -> Elise Benton Lydia -> Layla Jane -> Juliana Darcy -> Derek and so on. It was really ridiculous. I couldn't focus on the story anymore, because if I wanted to read the story I'd read the original and not some copy with different names and a different setting in a different time. Plus the writing was awkwardly worded sometimes and forced me to read over it again, because otherwise I might have misunderstood something. Not that there was much to miss since we all know the story. Due to Epic Fail being a retelling of Price and Prejudice there were no surprises and everything I had suspected became true. That doesn't make for suspenseful reading. The name of the book fits perfectly, because the book itself is "fail".

My Adolescent Lit. review: This book was recommended to me by a friend. I read Stroud’s Bartimaeous Trilogy a few years ago and was impressed by the characters he’d created. The cover shoes a girl in a blue dress and cape riding a horse through a forest. She is reaching out to a boy in torn shirt and ragged pants and appears about to pull him onto the horse behind her. In the distance is a dark figure raising a sickle and beyond that a stream of smoke lifts into the air. It looks dark and foreboding. p. 171 — Halli has spent his entire life (all 14 years of it) on his family’s estate near the end of great valley. He has grown up hearing stories of his ancestor Svein and the other great heroes of old. He has also heard stories of the Trows — great beasts who used to feast on human settlers until they were driven out of the valley by the heroes and who are now kept at bay by burial cairns and the occasional sacrifice of meat. Halli loves the tales of the heroes — their valor and honor — and is discontent with the current system of Lawgiving and Arbitration, where land and money are the only compensations for dishonorable acts. After the murder of one of his family members, Halli sets off down the valley in pursuit of the murderers, intent on revenge. p. 327 — The middle third of the book is mostly centered around Halli’s journey, its outcome, and the change his experiences work in his character. He is still the same Halli when he returns home, but he is wiser now. The tales of the heroes have lost much of their allure and he begins to ask himself, “What now?” I am enjoying the character development and at this point in the book I have no idea what to expect for the last 150 pages. The last third of the book was awesome — intense, suspenseful — and I was surprised, which I like. Stroud’s strength really is in character development, which he lavishes upon Halli. Halli grows throughout the story, but the core of who he is remains unchanged aside from the maturing affects of wisdom and experience. It’s a fantasy-meets-folklore story that would be good for ages 14+. It’s very readable, but some students may be intimidated by the length of the book.
