scenic, memorable, sweetly melancholy. here's a take courtesy of Amazon: (2 stars)Not the greatest thing, May 19, 2006 A Kid's Review Well when i got this book i thought that there was going to be more action in it. But it is just a story about a girl who did suicide (i am not done with it yet). This book also has to many swears in it, no one talks like that, only teens do (that are immature). I can't wait to be done with this book.

A well told story of a young journalist who is fired from his big city job and returns to his hometown and hometown newspaper. No one in the story is perfect, everyone has some flaws, but some characters are more likeable than others.

Julian, a bit of a nerd, gets a chance to start over at a new school and desperately tries to hide the fact that he knows all the answers. Ben is a smart jock but lacks confidence in his intellectual abilities. And Greta is a smart-as-a-whip girl who constantly wears a bike helmet on her fabulous hair. The three eventually realizes that they are all passionate inventors and form the Secret Science Alliance. Adventures and inventions keep them busy for the rest of the book. I really liked this graphic novel and found the kids' problems realistic, though their solutions may be a bit unrealistic. Greta's dad is also great -- supportive and caring. He is opening exhibits at the town museum and I enjoyed seeing him geek out over his work. In terms of content, this is very appropriate for elementary school, though the format will be challenging for struggling readers. Recommended for middle school.

I really did like this. I wish I could say I completely understood it.. but then it felt very much like Alice in Wonderland. Much of it was based on nonsense words and a class/political system that is foreign to me. (And being an Anglophile, I didn't feel it was a very British class system, altho maybe too subtle for a non-Brit to pick up.) But Fforde and his sense of wordplay has me fully in his grip. I laughed quite a bit at the library scene. And I enjoyed the whole hierarchy of the Colortocracy. This is supposed to be a series of 3 books, and I wait with about as much impatience as I wait for his Thursday Next series.

Helen’s problems are compounded by her shocking discovery that her mild-mannered and loyal husband was apparently leading a double life. The Ameses had painstakingly saved for a happy retirement, but that money disappeared in several large withdrawals made by Helen’s husband before he died. In order to support herself and garner a measure of much needed independence, Helen takes an unusual job that ends up offering far more than she had anticipated. Very well written and Berg describes the feelings of Helen dead on. Very relatable.
