Makes you think twice about the world of medicine. Although I am swayed toward conspiracy theories, she does back up her claims with impressive facts. Everyone at some point should check out this book.

An excellent read. I learned all of us woman can act weird/lame/goofy when it coems to men. That we put them up on a pedastool and if the relationship ends, we qustion what was wrong with me? When it should be, things just end.

Plot Sketch: It started when Meridian was born. Small creatures would find their way into her crib at night and die. As she got older, the animals got bigger. Every morning she would wake up with new dead things in her room. It started to happen not just at night too - kids at school started calling her mean names and staying away from her. Meridian just accepted that she killed everything that came near her. The only person who was seemingly unafraid of her was her little brother, Sammy. Then, on the morning of December 21, her parents hinted that they had something to tell her... something important. She went to school as usual, but on her way home, there was a car crash right in front of her house, a really bad one. It crippled Meridian immediately because even though she was walking, she felt the pain of the dying around her. Her father rushed to her and got her away from the scene and took her to Costco, where he took her through to the back and told her he would never see her again. He told her to go to see her great aunt in Colorado. All Meridian has is a few dollars and the things her mother had packed for her. She has no idea what she is. Once she finally arrives in Revelation, Colorado, she meets Tens, a young man who lives with and takes care of her great aunt, and who she is immediately attracted to. Read Meridian to find out their intertwined fate, and Meridian's path to becoming a full-fledged Fenestra, half-angel, half-human being who does not kill the beings she is around, but helps the dying get to the other side successfully without being intercepted by the Aternocti, who would take their souls to what we see as hell. Verdict: I Heart It! I really loved the story line. I think Amber Kizer created an original story and original concepts. I thought that they related to modern religions very well, and has created what could become a new classic good vs. evil struggle, if there was a little tweaking. There were several passages in the book that felt awkward and just didn't flow right. I really did enjoy it, and when I was away from it, I thought about the story, which I mark as a sign that a book is good. I hope there is another book in the series!! ADDED LATER: As I continued to reflect upon Meridian in the days after I posted this review, I began to appreciate the novel even more. There was a great point made in the novel that any religious belief can be manipulated and twisted to fit the ideals of a religious fanatic. The Bible was used throughout by the "bad guys" to justify their actions and beliefs. Kizer annoted the verses and you can find a list of them at the back of the ARC. I really didn't think much of it at the time, but I came to appreciate it even more. This book has many layers and is a lot deeper than I originally thought. The Gauntlet: At what location does most of the story take place? Revelation, Colorado What is the main character's name? Meridian Sozu Does I Heart Monster like the main character? I like Meridian. Though I can't really relate to her, I felt like she was a good character who grew as the story progressed. She's deep. How long did it take I Heart Monster to finish the book? A couple of days. Did I Heart Monster get stuck at any points in the book? If so, why? There were several parts that I had to re-read, but was still unable to ascertain what Kizer was trying to say. Later on I made sense of them, but they didn't flow, and I think if those little kinks were worked out, it would have been a better read for me. Is this a good read for Monster? Maybe, maybe not. I think that men will be able to enjoy this story. Tens is a very intensely male character with his outdoorsy skills, and his demeanor, and he is very likeable as well. What, if anything, would I Heart Monster change to make the book more interesting? Nothing.

I like her books, they can get a bit slow at parts though. i love how each chapter is from a different characters view and her characters have so much personality. great plot once again and can't wait to see what happens!!!

There are several books (like this one) where some women set up a brothel of men to cater to women. Has anyone actually done that? I ask merely out of intellectual curiosity, I promise. This is not a particularly great example of the genre, however. Butterfly was much better.

I found it to be massively disappointing. I think Goodreads led me to this book and the premise sounded really promising but it turned out to be very underwhelming. The main focus of the book, the murder trial, was, for me, the dullest part. There was no real suspense in the writing; Guterson never convinced me that the defendant, Miyamoto, was guilty of the charge brought against him, so the idea of it being a thrilling 'whodunit' was quite ridiculous. He went into so much detail in parts that it felt like I was reading an inventory list and I was seriously tempted to stop reading. You may think that I continued with the book to find out what happened with the trial, but I didn’t. I only kept reading because I’m stubborn: I hate to be defeated by a book. Additionally, I couldn't warm to the protagonist, Ishmael Chambers. He was still pining over his former girlfriend, Hatsue, who was now the wife of the accused man. Their teenage relationship had ended more than ten years previously but Ishmael just couldn’t move his life beyond Hatsue. Guterson probably intended the reader to feel sympathy for Ishmael but I was simply frustrated with him. I was even more irritated when he faced a big decision touted as a ‘moral dilemma’, but was nothing more than deciding whether or not to withhold evidence. Obviously there must have been something I liked because I gave the book two stars, and I’ll admit that at times Guterson did create some interesting images, especially those about the natural landscape of the island. I thought his writing was better when concerned with how the war affected the nature of the surviving soldiers in different ways, had he focused on this, I probably would’ve enjoyed it a little more. One of the review quotes on the back of my copy alluded to Guterson’s book as being of a similar standard to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Guterson should forever be grateful to this reviewer as it should fool a decent amount of people into buying his novel, who will be expecting something much better than Snow Falling on Cedars. Oh and the word ‘cedars’ features approximately 13,000* times. It drove me mad. *This figure is obviously an exaggeration but I wanted to make my irritation clear.

I made the mistake of setting this down while I finished Peace Like a River, and now I don't feel like picking it up again. That's not to say there's anything wrong with it. As dog books go, this one is pretty good. Steve Duno is funny, and writes very funny dialogue, Lou the dog sounds like a great dog (an understatement,) but, as he's dying on page one I know page The End (or thereabouts) is going to be an inspirational tear shedder, and, ok, he's a great dog - got that pretty early on - not only great, but Tony the Tiger grrrreeeaat! My only complaint is Steve Duno's outsized ego, but I've actually come to expect that from just about all the dog-trainer books, except for the Monks of New Skete. The other thing about this genre - an essay would do. A full book is too much. Readers Digest had the form down pat - 4 small pages, great dog, big loss, sob story, amen. That being said, if I hadn't set it down, or had anything else more compelling, I would have gladly finished it, and, barring any surprises, given it just as many stars.

Not my most favorite of Linda Howards books, but not my least either. This book reminded me a "Son of the Morning" The same idea of a woman on the run---only less time travel obviously. Quick and easy read.

I should first state that I'm a huge Kurt Vonnegut fan. Back when I was in high school, I took a short summer writers workshop where K. Vonnegut taught me how to write, how to hold onto my own style of voice, and how to be sarcastic and not give a damn what people think. I like to think that he shaped me into the man I hope to one day be. Simply put, this is the story about a young man named Billy Pilgrim and how he becomes unstuck in time, moving though random moments of his life, back and forth. Simply put, but worth so much more. What stuns me most about the history of this book, is how it was and still is banned in many schools. Are soldiers swearing that far from the truth? Is the horrific bombing in Dresden something we should block from our minds? Perhaps the controversy is a compliment, one that all writers strive to achieve. The ability to make people stand up and take note of words on paper, and good or bad, try to do something about them. This is a science-fiction book read throughout American high schools as a modern "classic." As if genre fiction can never be literature. He has shown the world, along with Orwell, Huxley, Poe and many others that it can, and I greatly respect him for that. When inevitably we all die, I hope that when I pass, people will talk about my death with the famous line from this book, "so it goes."
