i really enjoy jody picoult. most of the time when i start one of her books i have to read it straight through, not putting it down until i finish it. and, more often than not, i cry at certain parts and usually at the end. the story for this book was a really cool idea- i don't know how she comes up with such different ideas. and while this book was a good read and completely worthwhile, it just wasn't as great as her rest.

TGG probably deserves more than two stars, but I'm calling overrated on this one. Of course, I haven't read it since i was forced to in high school, but I didn't find any characters sympathetic. So it's a biting social commentary and historically relavant-- great. For me this just falls into the category of "I know I'm supposed to like this, but I hate it." It's okay if you hate it too!

the book is well written and the idea of it has so much potential but the author paints hadley as such a bland character. i don't think i'd feel as if i were missing out too much if i'd skipped this one and stuck with 'a moveable feast' instead.

A fun little book of essays covering 10 simple and elegant ("beautiful") experiments that deeply influenced scientific thought. I really enjoyed both the details of the experiments and those of the scientific beliefs of the times during which they were performed. The chapters on William Harvey and Luigi Galvani might squick those uncomfortable with details of animal experimentation.
