Boo. I'm so disappointed in this book that I am putting it down half read. Philippa Gregory has dumbed down her writing style to appeal to the masses and her strategy has backfired. I was so looking forward to learning about the Plantagenets and the Houses of York and Lancaster, but instead was fed a load of hooey romance novel-style drivel. Boo!

I really couldn't help finding that this book was quite insulting--that the whole point of pro-choice was to kill children. It was preachy and it really felt that way and I couldn't stop face palming at those inserted lectures. For a dystopian kids novel it was okay. Plot line was okay, a bit contrived. Some interesting characters. It flowed well and it was a quick read (being a YA novel). 2/5 because it did keep me interested enough for me to move through it quickly.

Wow. I did not see that coming. enjoying this memoir while finding that strength that often fails me to keep going. It was enlightening to read how Bertie found his own voice, by conquering his own shadows. I also admired the tenacity of his wife Elizabeth and the infallible faith that Lionel transmitted to the ppl that needed most. "Courage does not always roar. Sometimes it is a quiet voice at the end of the day, saying. .."I will try again tomorrow."

While the book has many interesting tidbits and its message is unimpeachable (stop ruining the oceans and their inhabitants), the author's style tends toward the narcotic more often than not. I'd hoped to learn more about sharks themselves. While I enjoyed learning about the economics of shark finning as well as the research into sharks' reproductive behavior (parthenogenesis!), this book would have benefited from a tighter edit.

This book was extremely entertaining. This book could have been the sister story of The curious incident of the dog in the night-time, except there was an actual human murder (not a dog), it took place in England and a girl was the narrator. Nevertheless, it was just as, if not more entertaining. The motives behind the murder got a bit complicated, and there were tons of literary references I didn't understand, but overall I really enjoyed the story line and the characters. I can't wait to find out what troubles Flavia gets in next.

Picked it up because I like travel stories, but ultimately the author drove me a little nuts in her indecision and childish ways. I did read the entire book and learned a bit about Indian customs and various religions, but I wouldn't rush out to read it again.

The Russian realists give me fits, but Tolstoy is the real deal. The easiest of the gigantic 19th century masterpieces to read, and I liked it better than some of the British stuff that I know better. Glad I finally faced my fears and read it, y'know? I'm surprised Oprah picked it for her book club because it's not about ham.

Sometimes rather good (rarely), sometimes very stupid (also not so often). If you have a specific aversion to crude humor, do not even bother with it. Or just don't bother with it in any case. I do see some strong points, but overall it is rather a mess.
